JMC intensifies efforts to control Stray Dog Population, Opens additional Sterilization Center at Chowadi

Jammu |:  In a significant step to ensure public safety, reduce dog bite incidents, and promote animal welfare, Jammu Municipal Corporation has expanded its Animal Birth Control (ABC) Program by starting an additional sterilization center at the SPCA premises in the Chowadi area. This initiative, under the direction of Dr. Devansh Yadav, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, aims to effectively control the growing population of stray dogs in Jammu city through humane and scientific methods, following the guidelines of the Government of India and the Animal Welfare Board of India.

Until recently, sterilization of stray dogs was carried out only at the Roop Nagar center, where about 12-18 dogs were being sterilized daily. However, with the increasing number of stray dogs and the need to accelerate the process, an additional center at Chowadi became operational in July 2025. This has doubled the sterilization capacity of the Municipal Corporation, and now nearly 40-50 stray dogs are being sterilized every day at both centers.

Sterilization plays a vital role in addressing the challenges posed by the uncontrolled growth of the stray dog population, which can lead to more dog bites, increased risk of rabies, and suffering among animals due to lack of food and shelter. Sterilized dogs tend to be healthier, calmer, and unable to reproduce, leading to a gradual and humane reduction of the stray dog population over time.

Animal Welfare Officer, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Dr. Gaurav Chowdhary appealed to citizens to support and cooperate with this important initiative. He informed that both Roop Nagar and Chowadi centers are operating daily as per government guidelines and requested residents to inform the Municipal Corporation if they see unsterilized stray dogs in their locality so that they can be included in the program at the earliest. He also reminded the public not to harm or relocate stray dogs, as it disrupts the program and violates animal protection laws.

The Jammu Municipal Corporation remains committed to creating a safer, cleaner, and more harmonious city for residents and animals alike. Citizens are encouraged to actively participate by reporting unsterilized dogs, feeding stray dogs responsibly in designated areas, and supporting the sterilization tea Together, we can build a safer and healthier Jammu while ensuring the welfare of animals.
