Leh | : The celebration of National Goat Day at KVK Leh Stakna, organized by the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), emphasized the significance of the Changthangi goat, a prized indigenous breed in Ladakh.

The event, part of the All India Coordinated Project on Changthangi Goat, aimed to raise awareness about the economic and nutritional value of this breed, which is essential for the livelihoods of local nomadic communities reliant on Pashmina production. Dr. Feroz Din Sheikh, Head of KVK Leh, highlighted the critical role of the Changthangi goat in supporting the income of Changthang nomads, while also noting the superior nutritional benefits of goat meat and milk. The event featured key speakers, including Tsewang Phuntsog, Director of Horticulture, who discussed the importance of livestock in achieving Ladakh’s organic farming goals, and Prof. Haroon Rashid Naik, who praised the initiative of National Goat Day and encouraged farmers to enhance their practices in goat rearing and Pashmina production. Farmers raised concerns regarding challenges such as threats from stray dogs, inadequate marketing facilities for Pashmina, and a decline in goat rearers. They called for supportive policies and research to protect this traditional occupation. The program also included insights from various experts on goat farming in Ladakh’s unique environment. Tsering Chosgyal, recognized as the “Best Goat Breeder,” showcased the breed’s potential by generating significant income from his herd. The event provided practical support to farmers, including essential resources and showcased stalls with handloom and value-added products, promoting diversification in goat-based enterprises. Over 70 farmers participated, alongside officials from various departments, underscoring the collaborative effort to enhance the region’s goat farming sector.
