Srinagar: Below is the weeklong timeline of the key public engagements of J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah witnessed within and outside Jammu & Kashmir this week:
LG’s Tributes To Rifleman Sunil Kumar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid solemn tributes at a wreath-laying ceremony in Jammu for Rifleman Sunil Kumar, martyred during Pakistani shelling in RS Pura. Joined by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Minister Satish Sharma, he also honored BSF officer Imteyaz, killed in the same incident. Sinha met the families, assuring them of full administrative support, including financial aid and employment opportunities for kin. He praised the soldiers’ bravery, emphasizing their role in safeguarding J&K’s borders.
CM Abdullah Call For Peace, Protection Of Border Populations: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah this week actively monitored the fragile ceasefire agreement established on May 10 following India’s Operation Sindoor. In statements shared via X, he stressed the need for lasting peace to protect border residents, particularly in shelling-hit areas like Poonch and Rajouri, and urged the central government to expedite relief measures.
LG’s Tributes To Zakir Hussain, Ex-Gratia Relief To His Family: LG Sinha visited the family of Zakir Hussain, a civilian killed in cross-border shelling in Poonch, offering condolences and promising ex gratia payments and rehabilitation support. Later, he attended a wreath-laying ceremony in Jammu for BSF constable Deepak Chingakham, who lost his life during Operation Sindoor’s counter-terror operations. Sinha lauded the armed forces’ swift response to Pakistani aggression, reiterating the government’s commitment to border security.
CM Abdullah’s Visit To Injured At Poonch Hospital: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited a government hospital in Poonch to meet civilians injured in Pakistani shelling, including women and children displaced from border villages. He announced immediate compensation of ₹5 lakh for families of the deceased and pledged to construct additional community bunkers to protect residents from future attacks. Meeting affected families, he expressed frustration over the “muted” national response to Kashmiri civilian deaths compared to the Pahalgam attack’s outrage. In an X post, he called the April 22 attack a “deliberate blow” to J&K’s peace and India’s diplomatic credibility, urging stronger measures against cross-border terrorism.
CM Abdullah Visit To Shelling Hit Uri Areas: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah this week conducted an extensive tour of shelling-affected areas in Uri, visiting villages like Salamabad, Lagama, Bandi, and Gingal. He met the family of Nargis Begum, a civilian killed in the attacks, assuring them of financial aid and home reconstruction support. Highlighting the tragic deaths of 12-year-old twins Zoya and Ayan Khan and their relatives in Poonch, he criticized the “selective outrage” over civilian casualties, urging national media and leaders to amplify these losses. Abdullah reiterated his government’s focus on peace, stating, “Our people deserve to live without fear of shelling or terror.”
LG Sinha Echoes DM Rajnath On Success Of Op Sindoor: LG Sinha publicly commended the Indian armed forces for their success in Operation Sindoor, which targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK. Echoing Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks, he supported calls for the International Atomic Energy Agency to supervise Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, citing its “irresponsible” actions. Sinha also reviewed progress on relief efforts for shelling victims, ensuring funds reached affected families.
CM’s Announcement For Reconstruction Of Shelling Hit Homes: CM Abdullah announced a comprehensive assistance package to rebuild homes damaged by LoC shelling, including grants for reconstruction and temporary housing for displaced residents. He emphasized long-term rehabilitation, particularly for border communities in Poonch, Rajouri, and Kupwara, and sought central funding to support these initiatives.
Solidarity Show Led By DM Rajnath, LG Sinha, CM Omar At Badami Bagh Cantonment: LG Sinha accompanied Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and CM Omar Abdullah during Singh’s visit to Srinagar’s Badami Bagh Cantonment and Srinagar Air Base. He praised Operation Sindoor as a “decisive blow” to terrorism; inspected Pakistani shells used in cross-border attacks, and expressed gratitude to J&K’s residents for their resilience. Sinha also joined Singh in raising ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans, reinforcing national unity. CM Abdullah participated in the Srinagar event with Singh and Sinha, emphasizing solidarity with the armed forces and J&K’s role in combating terrorism. He later chaired a high-level meeting with the Hoteliers Association at the Civil Secretariat to address tourism losses post-Pahalgam attack. Abdullah promised a multi-pronged strategy, including safety assurances, media campaigns, and financial incentives for tourism businesses, while seeking central government support. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit underscored India’s firm stance against terrorism. He described Operation Sindoor as the “biggest action” against terror, praised J&K’s residents as “warriors” in the fight, and criticized Pakistan as a “rogue nation.”
: LG Sinha’s Vigil On Security, Rehab Initiatives: LG Sinha focused on overseeing security and rehabilitation efforts, particularly in border districts recovering from shelling. He reviewed progress on ex gratia payments and infrastructure repairs, ensuring coordination between state and central agencies.
CM Abdullah’s Push For Tourism Revival In Kashmir : CM Abdullah continued his push for tourism revival, following up on the previous day’s meeting with hoteliers. He outlined plans for a global campaign to promote J&K as a safe destination, including partnerships with travel influencers and incentives for tour operators. Abdullah also appealed to the central government for a special economic package to support tourism-dependent communities in Pahalgam and Srinagar.
