Jammu : The Dance Department of the Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA), University of Jammu, celebrated World Dance Day with great enthusiasm, artistry, and a deep sense of homage to India’s rich cultural traditions.
The celebration was graced by Prof. Meena Sharma, Chief Guest and Chairperson of Utsaah–The Clubs, University of Jammu; Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar, University of Jammu; Prof. Sohaib Malik, Principal, IMFA; and Dr. Naseeb Singh Manhas.
The programme began on an emotional note, as a tribute was paid to Padma Vibhushan Guru Kumudini Lakhia, honoring her lifetime contribution to Kathak. Her recent passing at the age of 93 left an indelible void in the world of Indian classical dance.
The celebrations commenced with a soulful Tarana presented by students trained under Saba Majid, an alumna of the Dance Department. The second-semester students Pragya, Akshita, and Radhika captivated the audience with a unique Dogri-Kathak fusion, blending regional flavor with classical finesse. This was followed by an impressive Kathak performance on Bandish by the final-year students, winning wide appreciation.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of a Tarana by Saba and Ritika, composed and sung by none other than Pt. Birju Maharaj and choreographed by Dr. Priya Dutta, Head of the Dance Department, IMFA. Their performance was a heartfelt tribute to the Kathak legend.
In her address, Prof. Meena Sharma praised the Dance Department for its outstanding efforts in promoting artistic excellence. She highlighted how initiatives like these not only foster creativity among students but also deepen their connection with India’s rich cultural heritage. Applauding the leadership of Dr. Priya Dutta, she encouraged the department to continue providing vibrant platforms for young artists to express and evolve their talents.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar, University of Jammu, congratulated the department on successfully organizing a memorable event. He lauded the faculty’s dedication to nurturing young talent.
Dr. Naseeb Singh Manhas also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of such cultural engagements in preserving heritage and inspiring future generations. He encouraged more innovative explorations in the fusion of classical and regional art forms.
Earlier, Prof. Sohaib Malik, Principal, IMFA, delivered the welcome address, congratulating the Dance Department for the splendid organization of the event and acknowledging the hard work of the students and faculty members. The proceedings were skillfully anchored by Rajkumar Behrupia. The arrangements were managed by Vijay Kumar, ensuring the smooth flow of the programme. Faculty members present on the occasion included Dr. Sumit Madan, Dr. Roshi Shaminotra, Bindu Sharma, Rajesh Kumar, Rajkumar Behrupia, Dr. Sujata Rajput, Prabhat Bali, Shivani Kapoor, Amit Anand, Mohit Kumar, and Chander Dhari Kesar.
