Poonch: In a significant step towards strengthening forest resource assessment and sustainable management, the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department on Saturday hosted a two-day training workshop on National Forest Inventory (NFI) and Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) for field functionaries drawn from the Forest Divisions of the Jammu region.
The workshop was held in the presence of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force (PCCF & HoFF) Suresh Kumar Gupta, who graced the event as the Chief Guest. Among others present were CEO CAMPA T. Rabi Kumar; Nodal Officer FCA Dr. K. Anandh and Chief Conservator of Forests, Jammu Dr. M.K. Kumar, besides other Forest officers.
Two technical experts from the Forest Survey of India (FSI), Regional Office Northern Zone, Shimla, led the first day’s sessions with in-depth training on forest inventory methodologies, data collection standards, and the significance of NFI and CFI in scientific forestry. The second day featured hands-on field training on the laying out of sample plots, an essential component of forest monitoring and resource estimation.
The training underscored the pivotal role that NFI and CFI play in the compilation of the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) and the preparation of Working Plans, both crucial for policy-making and forest management in India and the region.
The workshop witnessed the participation of 70 officers of various ranks from the Forest Department, representing all the 18 territorial divisions of Jammu region. This initiative significantly contributed to the capacity building of field staff, equipping them with modern methodologies and best practices for conducting forest inventories.
Notably Jammu and Kashmir is a pioneer in undertaking such an inventory exercise on a self-reliant basis, unlike many other states which depend on the Forest Survey of India (FSI) to carry out similar studies. This step showcases the J&K Forest Department’s commitment to institutional strengthening and data-driven forest management strategies aimed at preserving the ecological wealth of Jammu and Kashmir.
