Srinagar: US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital triggered wide spread protests in Kashmir on Friday.
Reports said that anti US protests were held in different parts across Kashmir during which effigies of US President Donald Trump were burnt. As the day started with strict police restrictions in some Srinagar areas the law enforcing authorities disallowed Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.
Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for protest rallies after Friday congregational prayers across Kashmir Valley against the Trump’s decision declaring disputed Juresalem as the capital of Israel.
In a bid to curb protests, law enforcing authorities here in Srinagar city imposed restrictions in some parts while separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq and Aga Syed Hasan Almosvi Alsafvi were placed under house detention. Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was not allowed to move out from his house as usual . Geelani was not allowed to offer Friday congregational prayers in any mosque.
Reports said that life was disrupted in dozens of areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station Safakadal, MR Gunj and Nowhatta in old Srinagar city due to strict restrictions.
In wake of protest call forwarded by Joint Resistance Leadership, scores of people affiliated with Resistance Movement held protest against US decision recognizing disputed Jerusalem as capital of Israel.
The protest was held in Maisuma locality located in the heart of the Kashmir capital Srinagar. The protesters were carrying placards and banners seeking revocation of US decision and intervention of International community.
A massive protest was also reported from Hasanabad Rainawari area of Srinagar city. The angry protesters set ablaze the effigy of US president Donald Trump. Amid pro-freedom slogans, the protesters urged upon Islamic countries to snap relations with America whom they described as the big terrorist country.
Witnesses said that huge protest was carried out from Central Imam Bara Budgam after the Friday congregational prayers. Anjuman Shari Shain president Aga Syed Hasan who was scheduled to lead the protest rally was placed under house arrest. The protesters waved black flags and shouted anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.
Reports from Handwara town of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district said that a large number of people shortly after the culmination of Friday congregational prayers hit to roads and set US and Israel flags on fire.
The protesters chanted anti-Trump, anti-Israel and anti-US slogans. They described Trump as the worst enemy of Islam ever existing on the planet. The protest march culminated peacefully.
Police used tear-smoke shells to disperse protesters in main Chowk Pulwama who pelted stones on deployed forces. Intense clashes left many protesters wounded.
Reports said that protesters raised anti-US and anti-India slogans during their protests march.
Protests were also held in Kakapora, Sambora, Tahab and Rajpora areas of Pulwama district. Protests were also held in Anantang. Massive protests were reported from Kargil and Drass areas of Ladakh region.
Protest in Kargil was held under the banner of Imam Kohmani Memorial Trust (IKMT) and Islamia School Kargil (ISK).
