Eidi, the tradition of giving and receiving money on Eid, holds a special place in the hearts of Kashmiris. This simple yet profound custom enhances the joy of Eid and strengthens family ties. Eidi is not just about receiving money ,it symbolizes love, blessings, and the continuation of cherished cultural traditions. In Kashmir, where Eid is celebrated with immense enthusiasm, the tradition of Eidi adds a unique charm to the festivities.
The Cultural And Emotional Significance Of Eidi: In Kashmir, Eid is not merely a religious occasion but a festival that embodies warmth, generosity, and unity. The practice of giving Eidi has been deeply rooted in Kashmiri society for generations. Elders bestow Eidi upon children and younger relatives as a token of their affection and prayers for their prosperity. The excitement of receiving Eidi makes Eid even more special for the younger generation, who eagerly await this joyous moment. For elders, giving Eidi is a way to express their blessings and good wishes. It is an acknowledgment of the bonds of love within the family. The smile on a child’s face upon receiving Eidi is a priceless reward for elders, reinforcing the values of kindness and sharing.
How Eidi Is Given And Received In Kashmir: Eidi in Kashmir is traditionally given in the form of cash, enclosed in decorative envelopes or simply handed over during family gatherings. With modernization, some people have started giving small gifts along with money, making the gesture even more thoughtful. However, the traditional way of handing over crisp new currency notes remains the most cherished. The practice of Eidi is not limited to immediate family members. Uncles, aunts, grandparents, and even elder siblings participate in this custom, making it a communal celebration. The younger ones often excitedly compare their collections, planning how to spend their Eidi whether on toys, sweets, or saving it for something special.

“Eidi in Kashmir is more than just a monetary gift, it is a symbol of tradition, love, and togetherness. It fosters relationships, teaches values of generosity, and enhances the festive spirit of Eid. As generations continue to uphold this beautiful practice, Eidi remains a cherished part of Kashmiri culture, making Eid celebrations even more special.”

Eidi And Economic Aspects In Kashmir: The tradition of Eidi also has economic implications. The demand for new currency notes surges before Eid, as people prefer to give fresh, crisp notes. Local markets experience increased sales, with children spending their Eidi on clothes, accessories, and sweets. Small businesses, especially confectioneries and toy shops, witness a significant boost in sales during this festive period. Many Kashmiri families encourage their children to save their Eidi money, teaching them financial responsibility. Some even use it to buy books or educational items, blending celebration with a lesson in wise spending.
The Modern Evolution Of Eidi: While the essence of Eidi remains unchanged, the ways in which it is given have evolved. Digital transactions have become more common, with some families transferring Eidi via online payment platforms. Despite these modern adaptations, the tradition retains its sentimental value, as nothing can replace the joy of receiving a crisp note directly from a loved one’s hands. Social media has also influenced the Eidi tradition. Many young Kashmiris share their Eidi collections online, adding a new dimension to the custom. However, the fundamental spirit of Eidi as a symbol of love and familial bonding remains intact. Eidi in Kashmir is more than just a monetary gift, it is a symbol of tradition, love, and togetherness. It fosters relationships, teaches values of generosity, and enhances the festive spirit of Eid. As generations continue to uphold this beautiful practice, Eidi remains a cherished part of Kashmiri culture, making Eid celebrations even more special.
