Awantipora : The Department of Islamic Studies, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organized an Interdepartmental Symposium on the Promotion of Peace and Protection of Environment under the banner ‘Message of Ramadhan’. The event brought together scholars, faculty members, and students to reflect on the spiritual and social teachings of Ramadhan, emphasizing peace, compassion, and environmental stewardship.
Prof. Ayaz Hassan Moon, Dean Academic Affairs, IUST, was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Afroze Ahmad Bisati, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, attended as the Guest of Honour. The event was also attended by Prof. G.N. Khaki, Director, Centre for Spiritual Studies, and Dr. Showkat Hussain, Head, Department of Islamic Studies, along with directors, deans, heads of departments, university officers, scholars, and students.
In his address, Prof. Moon said that, Islam is inherently a religion of peace and teaches the protection of the environment as an act of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). He also highlighted IUST’s efforts to integrate equity into its system by developing a Student Aid Program, aimed at streamlining charitable contributions to assist students in need.
Dr. Bisati emphasized that Ramadhan promotes values of zakat, charity, and sadaqah, which, when directed effectively, can serve as powerful tools to break the chains of poverty and foster social justice. Dr. Showkat Hussain highlighted the spiritual and moral essence of Ramadhan, which instills qualities of self-restraint, compassion, and responsibility. The best papers were awarded.
