Jammu : Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Umesh Rai underscored the transformative impact of distance and online education, emphasizing its role in fostering inclusivity, flexibility, and alignment with contemporary educational demands. Speaking at the 49th Foundation Day of the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), he highlighted how the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Credit Framework have eliminated rigid boundaries between conventional, distance, and online education. These reforms, he noted, empower students to personalize their academic journeys by integrating face-to-face, digital, and open learning platforms.
The University Vice Chancellor Prof. Rai stressed the imperative need for faculty development and curriculum innovation, ensuring that distance education evolves beyond being an alternative to a competitive and engaging mode of learning. He advocated for interactive teaching methodologies, student-centric assessment systems, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies like AI-powered learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and digital resource repositories. “Education must transcend traditional classrooms, adapting to diverse learner needs and equipping students with industry-relevant skills while maintaining academic excellence,” he remarked.
Highlighting the University of Jammu’s forward-thinking initiatives, Prof. Rai spoke about the “Design Your Degree” program, which enables students to pursue interdisciplinary learning by integrating fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital humanities, and responsible citizenship. He also emphasized the importance of National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) compliance, which enhances students’ employability and global career prospects.
Prof. Rai further proposed leveraging radio broadcasting and digital outreach to extend educational access to remote areas, thereby making learning more inclusive. He commended CDOE’s role in democratizing education, urging educators to embrace innovation while upholding academic integrity. “Education must be adaptable, inclusive, and student-centered. The University of Jammu, through CDOE, is committed to leading this transformation,” he affirmed.
Encouraging CDOE to continue its pioneering efforts, Prof. Rai highlighted that distance and online education are crucial in meeting the growing demand for higher education. While acknowledging the achievements of the Director and faculty, he emphasized the need for equipping students with practical skills, asserting that true education is not just about information dissemination but about igniting curiosity and promoting deep engagement.
Reflecting on the value-added courses introduced under NEP, he stressed that every course should contribute meaningfully to a student’s growth. He highlighted that responsible educators not only impart knowledge but also instill values, underscoring that values cannot be taught merely through lectures but must be demonstrated through teachers’ actions and examples. On this occasion, he specially recognized Prof. Lalit Mangotra, former Dean of Sciences at the University of Jammu, who was the Guest of Honour. Acknowledging the Padma Shri conferred upon Prof. Mangotra, he described it as a moment of immense pride not just for the University of Jammu but for the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking on the occasion Prof. Lalit Mangotra, President of Dogri Sanstha, and the Guest of Honour expressed his deep gratitude to the university, the Vice Chancellor, and the Director of CDOE for inviting him to be part of a formal event at the University of Jammu after such a long time. He complimented the Vice Chancellor and the entire University fraternity for achieving NAAC A++ Accreditation. Acknowledging the collective efforts of past and present contributors, Prof. Mangotra noted that every milestone reached today stands on the foundation laid by many unsung heroes over the years.
Recounting personal experiences from an era when education was pursued with simple tools, Prof. Mangotra highlighted the stark contrast between past learning methodologies and the cutting-edge advancements of today. “From writing on wooden boards to using AI-driven learning platforms, the evolution of education has been remarkable. Today, students have the freedom to learn anytime, anywhere, breaking geographical barriers,” he remarked.
Prof. Mangotra also spoke about the changing dynamics of education, where the traditional authority of teachers has shifted towards student-centered learning. With hybrid learning models and interdisciplinary opportunities, students now have the flexibility to pursue diverse interests simultaneously. The speaker lauded the university’s progressive initiatives, including the introduction of dual-degree programs, which empower students to expand their academic horizons.
Prof. Anita Priyadarshini, Director, Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE) at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Keynote Speaker, addressed recent developments in educational technologies, particularly in Distance and Online Education. She emphasized that flexibility and openness are core principles of the National Education Policy (NEP). According to Prof.Priyadarshini, flexibility in programmes, curriculum, delivery, and examination systems are now the four pillars of modern education. She also explained how the National Credit Framework has bridged the gap between conventional and distance learning, allowing students to complete part of their degree in one mode and the rest in another. She stressed that learning should be at the heart of education, not examinations, and highlighted the importance of Learning Outcomes, as well as the integration of all aspects of education into broader learning goals. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of collaboration between industry and education to equip students with the necessary skills for employment. In closing, she noted that the traditional concept of “Lifelong Learning” has evolved into “Life-Widening Education,” where students acquire multiple skills and degrees simultaneously. Dr. Anupama Vohra, Professor of English in CDOE, welcomed Prof. Priyadarshini and shared her outstanding achievements in higher education, both nationally and internationally, particularly her work with UNESCO programs across various countries.
Earlier, Prof. Pankaj Srivastava, Director Centre for Distance & Online Education (CDOE), in his welcome address, gave the detailed overview of the CDOE. He emphasized the significance of celebrating the 49thFoundation Day of CDOE. He took the opportunity to reflect on the institution’s historical transformation, from its humble beginnings as the Institute of Correspondence at GITA Bhavan to its current form as CDOE. He expressed the Directorate’s firm commitment to providing education that transcends geographical boundaries and highlighted the challenges it has overcome and the successes it has achieved along the way. He acknowledged the contributions of former Directors, faculty, and staff in this journey and also recognized the passion and commitment of the students.
Presenting the Annual Report, Prof. Srivastava focused on the technological advancements, pursuit of excellence, commitment to inclusivity, and the all-around development of stakeholders that are now key pillars of CDOE. He shared details of institutionalized processes, including Grievance Redressal, Stakeholder Feedback, Placement Cell, and Alumni Cell. He also highlighted the success stories of students in both academics and extracurricular activities. In conclusion, he reaffirmed CDOE’s commitment to providing quality education through distance and online modes by continually enhancing its human and infrastructural resources.
On this occasion, the dignitaries also unveiled a book titled “Influencer Marketing,” authored by Prof. Sandeep Tandon, Director of CIQA, CDOE. The book has been published by Rajat Publications, Delhi. The Foundation Day celebration, held at the Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium of the University of Jammu, began with the dignitaries lighting the ceremonial lamp. Prof.HinaSaxena, Associate Professor at CDOE, conducted the proceedings.
On this occasion, the students of CDOE also showcased the cultural performances, coordinated by Dr.Neelam Choudhary, a faculty member of CDOE. The evening culminated with a vibrant Punjabi folk dance performance.
