Srinagar: The announcement of a possible e-bus service expansion to Bandipora, Kupwara, and other parts of north Kashmir has been met with enthusiasm from residents, who see it as a major step toward improved and eco-friendly public transport.
Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City, Owais Ahmad, said on Tuesday that authorities are actively exploring the feasibility of launching e-buses in these districts.
He highlighted the growing demand for the service and the encouraging revenue generation due to proper ticketing by passengers.
“We are motivated to expand the service, and recent requests from Kupwara and Bandipora have strengthened our resolve. We hope to see smart buses operating in these areas soon,” he said.
He further stated that the distance to these districts is suitable for e-buses, and necessary charging infrastructure can be developed if required. The initiative is expected to provide a cleaner, more efficient transport system, reducing dependency on traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
Additionally, under the PM e-Bus Seva scheme, 100 more electric buses are in the pipeline, currently undergoing the tendering process. “We are hopeful of announcing their rollout date soon,” Owais Ahmad added.
Locals have welcomed the move, calling it a much-needed step toward better public transport.
Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Kupwara, said, “For years, we have struggled with irregular transport services. If e-buses start operating here, it will be a game-changer for students, office-goers, and the general public.”
Zahida Bano, a college student from Bandipora, expressed her excitement, saying, “E-buses will be safer, more comfortable, and eco-friendly. I hope the government implements this plan soon.” Many residents also pointed out that the initiative will help curb pollution and reduce travel costs. Abdul Rashid, a retired government employee from Handwara, added, “This is a progressive step. Not only will it modernize transport, but it will also promote sustainable development in our region.”
The residents urged authorities to expedite the process and ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place to make the service operational at the earliest.
