World Soil Day observed in Budgam

Budgam: IN order to celebrate the World Soil Day, a day-long function was organized by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Budgam here at Sheikh-Ul-Alam Hall on Tuesday.

On the occasion, Director Extension SKUAST-K Professor Mushtaq Ahmad said the aim of the World Soil Day is to aware people about the protection and proper usage of the land.

He said the event is organized world across to aware human beings about their responsibility towards the protection of the soil.

Stating that the 95 percent food items come from the soil, which he said should be utilized for progressive farming with farmers making usage of latest and advanced technologies.

District Development Commissioner Budgam Mohammad Harun Malik as guest of honor called for the preservation of soil for the generation to come and urged farmers to use the land for the agricultural and horticultural purposes instead of providing it for the establishment of brick kilns and other construction purposes.

DDC on the occasion said farmers should stop erosion of the upper level of the soil which he termed as more fertile and enriched for the agricultural and horticultural products.

“We should preserve this soil for our next generations and should protect our Karewas from swindling for petty construction purposes including brick kilns,” DDC said.

The program was attended by hundreds of farmers from different areas of the district.

On the occasion KVK, played Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” for farmers and short movies were also played to create awareness about the soil protection, pruning of orchards and usage of different fertilizers for the result oriented yield.

During the function, a farmer’s pocketbook on soil sampling by KVK Budgam was also released.

KVK Budgam also launched soil health cards and distributed scores of such among the farmers to aware them about the quality of their soil.

Question- answer session was also held during the function where an expert panel led by Program Co-coordinator Dr Nasir Ahmad Dar KVK Budgam responded promptly to the queries about the soil testing, seeds, usage of fertilizers and diseases raised by the farmers.

Experts warned against the soil erosion and stressed on the protection of upper level of it.
