CUK’s DCJ Commemorates Indian Newspaper Day with Expert Lecture

Gulmarg : Department of Communication & Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir, observed “Indian Newspaper Day” by organizing an online lecture featuring Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat, former Head and Professor of Journalism at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.
In his message to students and scholars, Vice-Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath underscored the historical importance of the day and encouraged aspiring journalists to uphold ethical and fact-based journalism. In his keynote speech, Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat delivered an engaging lecture on the evolution of newspapers in India, their contemporary relevance, and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism. He outlined both the opportunities and challenges posed by AI, along with key concerns such as declining print readership, the rise of fake news, and the credibility crisis in the media industry.nSpeaking on the occasion, Prof. Shahid Rasool, Dean, School of Media Studies, emphasized the role of newspapers as instruments of societal change. He also raised concerns over the decreasing credibility of media due to increasing trivialization, commercialization, and commoditisation of news.
The session also highlighted the historical significance of Indian Newspaper Day, marking the beginnings of journalism in the country. Students and scholars were encouraged to recognize their responsibility in upholding ethical and fact-based journalism in an era of rapid media transformation. The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Arif Nazir, Head of the Department, who encouraged students to engage actively in the discussion. The lecture witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, scholars, and alumni, followed by an interactive Q&A session. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Nookaraju, Asst Professor.
