CUK’s All India Inter-University Winter Games declared open at Gulmarg

Winter Sports Capital, Gulmarg turns abuzz

Gulmarg : Minister of Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma declared the All India Inter-University Winter Games 2024-25 open here on Thursday.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Central University Kashmir Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Joint Secretary of the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, Dr. Baljit Singh Sekhon, MLA Gulmarg, Farooq Ahmad Shah, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof Shahid Rasool, Deans of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members of the Central University Kashmir. Around 200 sports persons and officials from 27 Indian Universities are participating in the two day event comprising Skiing and Ice-stock. The event is organised by the Central University Kashmir in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities.
Addressing the participants, Satish Sharma, Minister of Youth Services & Sports who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, said “It is an honor to be part of this prestigious event that celebrates the spirit of sportsmanship and the rich winter sports culture of India.” “I commend the Central University of Kashmir and the Association of Indian Universities for organizing such a remarkable event that provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents.” The Minister asked the participants of universities from other parts of the country to become the brand ambassadors of Gulmarg and Kashmir. “You should spread a word about the beauty of Gulmarg and the hospitality of the people, so that tourism in this region will get a flip,” he said.
Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, Vice Chancellor, said “We are thrilled to host the All India Inter-University Winter Games 2024-25. This event not only highlights the athletic prowess of our students but also showcases the natural beauty and potential of Gulmarg as a winter sports destination. We look forward to an exciting and successful competition that will mark the beginning of many bigger events to promote winter tourism in Kashmir”.
Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir said Winter sports are not just about competition; they are about resilience, teamwork, and pushing one’s limits. I am delighted to see the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants. This event is a testament to the growing interest in winter sports in our region.” Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, IUST, Awantipora said “Gulmarg, with its pristine beauty, is the perfect backdrop for this event. I am confident that the All India Inter-University Winter Games will inspire many younger athletes to take up winter sports and bring glory to our nation.”
Dr. Baljit Singh Sekhon, Joint Secretary, Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi said “This event is a significant step towards promoting winter sports at the university level. It fosters a sense of unity and healthy competition among students from different parts of the country. I congratulate the Central University of Kashmir for their efforts in making this event a reality.” MLA Gulmarg, Farooq Ahmad Shah in his address, referred to Gulmarg as the “winter capital of India” and said the efforts are afoot to develop and transform the place to attract foreign tourists for skiing. Appreciating the alps of Gulmarg, Mr. Shah said, the alps are the best in the world and skiers are getting the best of the facilities.
Earlier, Dean School of Education, Prof. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani, in his welcome address, detailed about the functioning of the Physical Education Department and the activities conducted. He said the participation of several universities in the event symbolises its success.
