Sharma’s irrelevant engagements in Kashmir

Though the political engagement for resolution of Kashmir issue is the long awaited demand of the people of Jammu & Kashmir but Delhi’s special representative on dialogue in Kashmir Dineshwar Sharma is talking to traders, students and smaller associations on issues which are not even remotely connected with the resolution of Kashmir. Even naives endorse the general public opinion that Kashmir issue has been at the core of difficulties in India-Pakistan relations but the like the previous central government the incumbent Modi government too is trying to settle scores over its political rivals in both the state assembly elections. Let the incumbent Modi government at the centre count the militants killed during last thirty years and the draconian laws imposed in the state during last seventy and think about the causes of alienation deepening year after year in the state. Like Dineshwar Sharma many interlocutors were appointed by the previous government but they failed in their attempts to address even the issues which can resolved within the parameters of Indian constitution. Ironically the central government has through several constitutional amendments taken away some powers granted to the state under instrument of accession and has imposed some draconian laws which are used to curb the dissenting voices and democratic rights of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. Triggering a new controversy the central government has taken a very lenient view of the allegations of torture by some Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar jail. Calling for a report on the allegation of a torture was though an action which people expected from the Home Minister Rajnath Singh as even the Delhi High Court has constituted its own probe panel for probing the allegations of assault but an immediate attachment of the jail authorities accused of allowing or committing assault on Kashmir prisoners by the home minister would sent out a message that justice delivery system is working well in the central government.

Had Dineshwar Sharma the centre’s special representative on dialogue in Kashmir been interested in rebuilding the trust and confidence in the working of the justice delivery system in Jammu & Kashmir the first call to Home Minister Rajnath Singh on reports about alleged torture of Kashmiri prisoners should have gone from him only as he as centre’s special representative in Kashmir is bound to do so. So actions of Dineshwar Sharma in Kashmir show his intents of undertaking irrelevant engagements in Kashmir.

Unfortunately Dineshwar Sharma the special representative of the central government on Kashmir is yet to utter a word of concerns or condemnation over the alleged assault of prisoners in Tihar Jail. So by all standards of understandabilities Dineshwar Sharma does not bother to respond to the allegations of harassment against uniformed men but is showing interest in talking to local authorities on local issues. Sharma is perhaps not interested to look at the denial of basic rights in Kashmir and his silence over reports about torture of the Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar jail speaks volumes about the intents of his engagement in Kashmir.
