The year 2024 proved to be a transformative one for Jammu and Kashmir, marked by significant milestones and challenges that shaped the region’s political, social, and cultural landscape. From historic agreements to record-breaking achievements, here’s a sneak-peek of the key events that defined the year.
1. India-China Peace Accord In Ladakh: In a landmark diplomatic achievement, India and China reached a peace agreement to resolve tensions in the Ladakh sector. The deal led to the establishment of buffer zones and the withdrawal of troops from contentious areas like Pangong Tso and Hot Springs. This resolution was a major step forward in de-escalating the border standoff, providing much-needed stability to the region after years of uncertainty.
2. Restoration of Democracy With Assembly Elections: After a decade-long hiatus, Jammu and Kashmir held its first assembly elections since the revocation of Article 370. The elections witnessed an impressive voter turnout, reflecting the public’s desire to re-engage with democratic processes.The National Conference emerged victorious, with Omar Abdullah assuming the role of Chief Minister. This historic event marked a significant stride toward political normalization in the region.
3. Security Concerns; Kathua Attack: Despite positive developments, security challenges persisted. A militant attack in Kathua in July claimed the lives of many soldiers, drawing attention to the evolving dynamics of militancy in the Jammu region.The attack underscored the need for robust security measures and continued vigilance to address the shifting epicenter of militant activity.

4. Tourism Hits an All-Time High with Extra Flavor of Kashmiriyat: Jammu and Kashmir recorded a historic surge in tourism, with over 3 million visitors in 2024. The Tulip Festival in Srinagar and adventure tourism in Gulmarg and Pahalgam were standout attractions.This unprecedented influx bolstered the region’s economy and reaffirmed its position as a premier global tourist destination, showcasing its unmatched natural beauty and cultural vibrancy. A snow spell before year end saw tourists stranded on closed roads, most of them were hosted by local population in their homes and mohalla mosques with a touch of Kashmiriyat that shall remain in the memories of tourists throughout their lives.
5. Srinagar Joins UNESCO Creative Cities: A major highlight of the year was Srinagar’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network under the Crafts and Folk Arts category. This recognition celebrated the city’s rich tradition of handicrafts, including Pashmina shawls, papier-mâché, and carpet weaving.The accolade not only brought international attention to the region’s artisans but also opened doors for collaborations aimed at preserving and promoting its cultural heritage.
Looking Ahead: The year 2024 was a blend of triumphs and trials for Jammu and Kashmir.
