Do you dread calculations and fear formula? Do you believe you’re “just not good at Math”? Do you think Math is a subject only geniuses can understand? Are you ready to face your Math fears and overcome then once and for all? Everyone has to know Math since it is a practical, all-purpose topic. All across the world, it is a crucial component of the curricula. One of the cornerstones of the formal educational system, it is an interdisciplinary language and tool. It goes on to say that the study of amount, structure, space, and change is what constitutes Math. It is an example of a human undertaking that includes time, distance, and several systems of distance measurement that have evolved globally. The science of Math
deals with well-defined concepts and objects that may be subjected to various analyses and transformations via the application of “mathematical reasoning,” leading to findings that can be relied upon. It is an essential requirement in every field of intellectual endeavour and human development to cope with the challenges of life. Math is an important subject with broad applicability to everyday life, yet Math is often considered as a difficult subject in schools. As early in the 1st grade, students can start displaying negative attitudes towards learning Math and gradually develop it in the form of Math anxiety. Furthermore, it appears that the school has not paid particular attention to how classes are taught or how to teach and learn for children who struggle with math. On the other hand, as pupils go to higher grades, their Mathematical skill rapidly declines. There could be a variety of dominant variables contributing to elements like bad attitudes, math anxiety, and
declining math performance among pupils. Math Phobia also known as Math anxiety is a common phenomenon that affects millions of students worldwide. It is persistent and irrational fear of Math, Which can lead to avoidance, anxiety, and poor performance in Math-related tasks. Consequently, fear increases day by day
towards Math and eventually it develops in the form of phobia. The lack of ability in Math in numeracy has received increasing attention in the last few decades and currently its graph is nearer to zero. The ability to use basic Math is more important as the modern day’s society has become more complex. Some children may have some problems with Math due to some reasons. The specific Math phobia which basically comes due to the arithmetic or fear of numbers. Such phobia is called arithmo phobia or numero phobia. This type of phobia affects
student’s attitude towards Math and often creates ridiculous fear of numbers. There are several reasons behind the Math phobia viz. the ignorance for the subject, discontinuity in concept learning, lack of concentration and practice, avoiding participating in teacher learning process, open insult by teacher, parents, and peers, low scores in the subject and the negative perception about Math. This fear is somewhat unusual in that it encompasses a wide variety of specific phobias, including a generalized fear of all numbers and fear of specific numbers.
Personal Experience: During my UG studies I was terrified of Math I avoid math class, fear math work, and feel anxious with mathematical problem. My phobia was so intense that I considered changing my major to avoid math altogether. However, I realized that it was an essential tool for my future career, and I needed to overcome my fear. With determination, I began to confront my phobia, I started attending math tutoring session, practising regularly, and using online resources to supplement my learning I gradually progressed from basic algebra to advance mathematics, and my grace improve significantly. Currently, as a tutor I have had the privilege of working with numerous students who have struggled with math phobia.

As educators, we must create a nourishing environment that encourages students to confront their fears and build confidence in their Math abilities. Here’s a personal experience that stands out: Salwa Shah, a bright and eager UG student. Initial session: Salwa was hesitant and nervous, avoiding eye contact. She confided in me that she hated math and felt like she was “not good enough.”
Challenges: Salwa struggled with basic algebra concepts, and her fear of failure led to mental blocks during exams.
Approach: I employed empathy, patience, and encouragement. We started with simple problems, breaking then down into manageable steps. I used visual aids and real-world examples to make math more relatable.
Breakthrough: At the end of session, Salwa solved complex problem with ease. Her face lit up with pride, and she exclaimed, “ I did it! I finally understand!’”
Progress: Salwa’s confidence soared. She began to enjoy math, even asking for extra work. Her tests scores improved significantly, and she started to see herself as a capable math student. Salwa’s transformation was a testament to the power of supportive tutoring. As a tutor, it’s rewarding to see students overcome math phobia and develop a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.
Causes Of Math Phobia: There are various reasons why people develop a fear of Math. Math phobia can be caused by a lack of various aspects related to teaching and learning, such as: a positive attitude toward Math, an improved curriculum, breaking down topics into units, the use of ICTs in Math instruction, counseling, and a good teacher-student relationship. It is from parents and
instructors, not from personal experience, that one learns to be anxious about Math.
According to Foley and colleagues, an Indian study discovered that parents with high levels of Math anxiety inadvertently give their kids the impression that math is scary and difficult when they assist with their school work. Similarly, an American study discovered that students’ anxiety level related to Math is influenced by their math teacher. The children read the subtle body cues of their elders to determine whether Math is something to fear or to feel good about. The students who experience fear or discomfort in the case of Math is the root cause of Math phobia. Thus, Math phobia is mainly caused by the test and examination (due
to the pressure to perform well), people (individual, parents, teachers and peers) due to individual low proficiency, parents concept of difficulty, teacher poor knowledge delivery and peers negative feeling toward Math and nature of Math (due to abstract nature and not to relate all aspects in real life). The following points may be the causes of Math phobia: (i) Weak teaching method and weak Math background (ii) Teachers’ aggressive, stressful and irritating characteristics (iii) Inability to solve Math’s problems iv) Bad relationships between
a teacher and a student (v) Inability to solve too much home assignment (vi) Not to
understand Math in class (vii) Unable to solve mathematical tasks viii) Use of abusive words by teacher (ix) Negative attitude towards Math (x) Not able to solve Math problem in time (xi) Not to be child-friendly teaching environment xii) Math learning difficulty (dyscalculia) (xiii) Community Influence (negative perception) (xiv) Low self esteem (xv) Lack of analogies
Way To Overcome Math Phobia: It is fair to say that Math is not everyone’s favourite subject. Some students have the feelings of tension and anxiety or fear toward Math. Such negative feeling towards Math suffers them
day by day and it can be difficult to shift from a mind-set of failure to a more positive attitude. Different research shows that if teachers as well as the parents deal with the Math phobic student in time by different way to shift into positive mind-set, it is not impossible. So many students may have suffered from Math phobia due to the result of several negative experiences and perception in the past. It can be overcome by controlling anxiety, improving Math skills and developing positive attitude towards Math. The following steps are the main way forward from Math phobia and perhaps find a way to view Math in a more positive light.
(i) Reinforce the child’s sense of intelligence and skill in Math learning (ii) Create a supportive environment for learning Math (iii) Encourage the child to tackle in Math (iv) Explain the child about positive uses of Math (v) Familiarize the child into Math teaching aids (vi) Make Math teaching fun with games and puzzles (vii) Avoid to compare the child’s abilities to others (viii) Increase the use of instructional materials in teaching (ix) Use of innovative and contemporary teaching approaches (x) Develop and maintain close student- teacher relationship. Math phobia is a common obstacle that can hinder academic success. But it is not insurmountable. With the right mind set, support, strategies, any one can over come the Math phobia and develop a deeper appreciation for Math. As educators, we must create a nourishing environment that encourages students to confront their fears and build confidence in their Math abilities. By sharing my personal experience and offering practical advice, I hope to inspire students and educators to tackle Math phobia head-on and unlock the doors to a world of mathematical possibilities.
