The snow-covered valleys of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg have already begun to attract a significant number of tourists, both domestic and foreign, who are eager to explore the beauty of the region. According to a tourism official, the region is set for a bumper season with all hotels in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg fully booked as the New Year approaches. The winter season has become a highlight of Kashmir’s tourism calendar. The snowfall has arrived on time, and we are seeing an overwhelming number of visitors eager to enjoy the serene beauty of the valley. The demand for accommodations is higher than ever, with many tourists opting to spend the holiday season in Kashmir. The year 2024 has already proven to be a landmark one for Kashmir’s tourism industry. With 3 million tourists visiting the region in just the final weeks of the year, it’s clear that Kashmir is on track to break previous records. The influx of foreign visitors has been particularly noteworthy, signaling a growing global interest in the region. Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director of Tourism told Kashmir Horizon that number of foreign tourists has already exceeded the previous year’s numbers. Up until December 20, we have welcomed around 43,000 foreign tourists, which is a significant increase compared to last year,” he said. “This is a clear indication of the growing global interest in Kashmir’s winter offerings,” he added.
Gulmarg, one of Kashmir’s most famous winter destinations, has always been a top draw for adventure tourists. Known for its world-class skiing slopes, Gulmarg offers an experience that attracts winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. With the arrival of heavy snow, the region is preparing to host thousands of tourists eager to hit the slopes and engage in other thrilling winter activities like snowboarding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Shabir Hassan, a hotelier in Gulmarg said that it has been a busy week, with our hotel rooms already fully booked for the New Year,” he said. “This year, Gulmarg is set to witness record-breaking footfall, and we are ready to cater to both domestic and international tourists.” In addition to skiing, Gulmarg is also hosting various cultural and entertainment events to make the winter experience even more special. Tourists can enjoy musical evenings, bonfire gatherings, and even torch skiing, where participants ski down the slopes holding torches to create a mesmerizing display. These events, along with the natural beauty of the area, make Gulmarg a must-visit destination for winter tourists.
While Gulmarg often steals the spotlight, destinations like Pahalgam and Sonamarg are emerging as hidden gems for winter tourism. These locations offer a quieter, more serene experience, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the snow-covered landscapes. Pahalgam, with its lush meadows and calm rivers, transforms into a peaceful winter retreat during the colder months. Its scenic beauty is enhanced by the blanket of snow, making it an ideal location for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful getaway. Similarly, Sonamarg, known for its breathtaking views of the Thajiwas Glacier and towering mountain peaks, is gaining popularity among winter tourists. The combination of scenic beauty and a host of outdoor activities, such as trekking, snowshoeing, and photography, makes Sonamarg a perfect winter destination. The tourism department has also been promoting these lesser-known destinations, encouraging tourists to explore the entire region beyond the popular Gulmarg. With a growing number of tourists discovering the charm of Pahalgam and Sonamarg, these areas are quickly becoming hotspots for winter tourism.
Winter sports are an integral part of Kashmir’s winter tourism, and the region is making sure to offer a wide variety of activities to cater to different tastes. From skiing and snowboarding in Gulmarg to snow trekking in Sonamarg, the options for adventure tourists are limitless. Moreover, the tourism department has planned several events for the upcoming winter season to enhance the visitor experience. “We have scheduled musical evenings, firework shows, and cultural performances, especially around the New Year,” said an official. “We aim to offer a festive atmosphere and create lasting memories for our visitors.” One of the major attractions this winter is the Khelo India Games, scheduled to take place in Gulmarg. The event is expected to bring together top athletes from across the country and showcase the best of winter sports. Despite some challenges posed by previous snowfall delays, the event is expected to be a huge success this year, further solidifying Kashmir’s reputation as a premier winter sports destination.
With the rise in tourist numbers, the Kashmir administration has been working diligently to ensure that the region is fully prepared for the influx of visitors. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, emphasized the importance of effective planning to manage winter tourism. “We are fully prepared for the winter season and have ensured that all necessary services, such as electricity, water, and transportation, are in place,” he said. The administration has also focused on improving infrastructure and providing better services to tourists. Ensuring safety and convenience for visitors is a top priority, with measures being put in place to handle the challenges posed by harsh winter conditions. “We are conducting daily reviews to ensure that everything is in place for a smooth and enjoyable winter season,” added Bidhuri. Winter tourism in Kashmir has always been a magical experience, but this year promises to be even more extraordinary. With record-breaking numbers of tourists, new events, and a growing focus on winter sports, Kashmir is firmly positioned as one of India’s premier winter tourism destinations.
