Restrictions, Shutdown hit normal life across Kashmir, train services remain suspended

Srinagar: Restrictions enforced by law enforcement authorities in several areas of Srinagar city and shut down across Kashmir in response to a called by Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq and JKLF Chairman Mohammad Malik crippled normal life in valley on Monday. Reports said shops and commercial establishments in most of the areas in Kashmir valley remained closed. Public transport was also off the roads.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani the Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik had jointly called for a protest shutdown Monday in solidarity with Kashmiri prisoners lodged in various jails and also against the continued action of armed forces in South and North Kashmir. Yasin Malik was arrested to prevent him from leading protests in Srinagar.
District Magistrate Srinagar, Syed Abid Rashid Shah said while strict restrictions were imposed in Rainawar, Safakadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar and M R Gunj police station areas of the city, partial restrictions were in force in Maisuma and Kralkhud areas. The curbs were imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, he said. Most shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut across Kashmir, officials said.
They said public transport was off the roads at most places, but private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws were seen plying. The daily train service between Baramulla to Banihal was also suspended for the day.
