Srinagar : The department of CVTS, SKIMS performed “Bentall’s Procedure with Replacement of Arch of Aorta”.
A 40-year-old male patient had presented to a peripheral hospital with symptoms of acute chest pain and headache. A CT scan in the periphery had revealed acute aortic dissection. He was immediately referred to the department of CVTS, SKIMS where further investigation revealed that he had acute Aortic dissection involving Arch of Aorta including arch vessels which supply blood to the brain and upper part of body, an official statement here on Monday reads.
There was associated severe leakage of Aortic Valve. The condition if untreated has a risk of 100 percent mortality, it added.“The patient was successfully operated with restoration of blood flow to the brain and the rest of the body. The procedure involved replacement of the Aortic valve along with the major blood vessel called Aorta and blood vessels supply brain arising from Aorta by an artificial Dacron tube graft. The surgery lasted for 6 hours during which the patient was on cardiopulmonary bypass. The patient was shifted to Cardiac ICCU and was extubated after 3 hours without any neurological or Vascular deficit recovered and has been discharged,” it added.
The statement reads that the program has been going on in CVTS SKIMS for the last 2 years with simple Bentall’s procedures being done earlier also wherein both surgical correction as well as endovascular stenting of such patients was done. It is pertinent to mention here that after procurement of “State of Art equipment” the department has done more than 15 “Endovascular Stenting (EVAR & TEVAR) in the last one year.
Earlier, the patients needed to go outside for these procedures. These procedures are being done at a few reputed cardiac centres in the Country. The procedures now done at SKIMS will benefit the patients and they don’t now require to go outside for these treatments, it reads.
The department of CVTS expressed their gratitude to Prof. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie, Director SKIMS & EOSG, for encouragement and administrative support.
The department also thanked supportive departments like Cardiology, who evaluate these patients as and when required and to the department of Anesthesiology for their logistic support without which these procedures would not be possible
