Bharat Bhasha Utsav Diwas at IIM Jammu: A Cultural Extravaganza Enriched by Linguistic Diversity

Jammu : IIM Jammu under the leadership of Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu hosted the Bharat Bhasha Utsav Diwas, a celebration that unfolded as a vibrant tapestry of India’;s linguistic diversity. “Bharatiya Bhasha
Diwas” was celebrated on the Janma Jayanti of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, a multi-linguist and freedom fighter 4 at its IIM Jammu Mandapam Auditorium.
The event was graced by Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, IIM Jammu, Dr. Apurva Yadav, Co-Chairperson Student Affairs, IIM Jammu and Dr.Jaganth.G., faculty, IIM Jammu. The Bharat Bhasha Utsav Diwas was a celebration that transcended linguistic boundaries, bringing together students,
faculty, and staff in a shared celebration of India’;s rich cultural heritage. The event featured a myriad of activities, performances, and interactive sessions that showcased the linguistic tapestry of the country. All the Student participants presented mesmerizing performances, recitations, and skits in various Indian languages, offering a kaleidoscope of linguistic talent.
Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, IIM Jammu, highlighted that language is the soul of culture, with Bharatiya Bhasha Diwas beautifully showcasing India’s linguistic diversity while honouring the legacy of Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi. He reflected on India’s immense cultural richness, noting how its diversity is reflected in the unique qualities of languages, such as the khadi boli in Hindi, which balances hard and soft expressions. Sharing an anecdote, he
recalled a linguistics professor’s efforts to craft an impactful advertisement by carefully selecting the right language to ensure its message remained memorable. He emphasized that language, as a powerful tool, can create meaningful and lasting communication when used effectively.
Following this, Bandish, the music club of IIM Jammu, captivated the audience with melodious songs in regional languages like Garhwali and Kumaoni, which were thoroughly enjoyed and praised by the attendees. The cultural showcase continued with Groove Club’s mesmerizing dance performances that depicted the rich cultural tapestry of India through various traditional dance forms. The event culminated on a patriotic note with the rendition of the National Anthem, leaving the audience with a sense of pride and unity. The enthusiastic participation of the IIM Jammu community made Bharat Bhasha Utsav Diwas a resounding success, reinforcing the institute’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and culturally rich learning environment.
