With none else than Dineshwar Sharma the central government’s new point on Kashmir rejecting the demand of Mirwaiz and Geelani on release of political prisoner the doors for dialogue with the top separatist leadership are almost closed.
With top central leaders including Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Arun jaitley hoping the restoration of peace after the killing of top leaders of some leading militant outfits in Kashmir it seem central leaders have no idea of the measures required for restoration of peace in the state. Facts speak themselves that even killing of thousand of militants during last thirty year could not bring Kashmir anywhere closer to restoration of peace and this undisputed fact is a grime remind to the incumbent central government that not killing militant but a serious unconditional political engagement is the only way to resolve crisis in Kashmir which stands at the centre of difficulties in India-Pakistan relation for the last seventy years. Though incumbent central government has appointed Dineshwar Sharma its new point man for dialogue in Jammu & Kashmir but unfortunately Sharma has the mandate to talk to those accepting the constitutional bonding of Jammu & Kashmir with the Union of India but not those challenging the constitutional integration of the state with the Union of India. The decision to withdraw the case against the first time stone pelters is a welcome step but the decision should have been taken on the advice of the elected Chief Minister of the state and not on the advice of the newly appointed point man on Kashmir dialogue. By publicly pronouncing that the decision to withdraw cases against stone pelters has been taken on the advice of newly appointed point man on Kashmir dialogue on Kashmir the incumbent central government has sent out a message that Sharma wields more power and authority than the elected Chief Minister of the state.
No doubt the power to review the cases has been given to the incumbent Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti but given the fact that mainstream opposition parties including National Conference (NC), Congress , Peoples Democratic Front (PDF),CPI(M) and Democratic Party(Nationalist) have claimed that Sharma advised the central government only when they raised the demand for release of first time stone pelters during his maiden visit as new point man to Srinagar earlier this month. So by all standards of understandabilities the central government’s decision is not a concession to Mehbooba government but an attempt to encourage the political rivals of the incumbent Chief Minister. The outright rejection of the demand of the release of political prisoners raised by the likes of Mirwai Molvi Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geenai has sent out a message that the Modi government is banking heavily on its arm twisting methods use to neutralize militancy and not on any political initiative with the separatist leadership. With none else than Dineshwar Sharma the central government’s new point on Kashmir rejecting the demand of Mirwaiz and Geelani on release of political prisoner the doors for dialogue with the top separatist leadership are almost closed.
