Kulgam/Nov,27: The residents of Kulgam district in South Kashmir have renewed their appeal to the government for the establishment of a dedicated maternity hospital in the area, citing the urgent need for specialized maternal and child healthcare facilities. The absence of such a facility has left expectant mothers in the region, as well as neighboring districts like Shopian, struggling to access timely and quality care.
Despite its strategic location and significant population, Kulgam lacks a maternity hospital, forcing residents to travel to Srinagar or other distant districts for treatment. This not only causes delays during critical emergencies but also increases risks for both mothers and newborns.
A maternity hospital in Kulgam would cater not only to the healthcare needs of the district but also serve as a referral center for the neighboring district of Shopian and parts of Anantnag. It would provide round-the-clock services, including modern labor rooms, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), prenatal and postnatal care, and gynecological consultations.
Healthcare experts and local representatives have stressed the importance of addressing this gap. “Kulgam and its surrounding areas urgently need a dedicated maternity hospital. It will not only improve access to maternal healthcare but also reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in this region,” said a healthcare professional.
Residents have urged the government to allocate funds for this project under existing healthcare schemes such as the National Health Mission and ensure it is prioritized in the upcoming budget.
“The establishment of a maternity hospital in Kulgam would bring immense relief to thousands of families. It is not just about healthcare—it is about saving lives,” said a local activist.
The residents remain hopeful that the government will take swift action to fulfill this critical demand, ensuring better healthcare infrastructure and a healthier future for the region.
