Srinagar : The Director Agriculture Kashmir, Chowdhury Mohammad Iqbal on Tuesday visited potato seed tubers sorting, grading plant at central potato store Lalmandi Srinagar and inspected different processing activities there.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director said potato processing (sorting, grading, treatment, packaging etc) plays an important role in ensuring that only the healthy and quality potato seed tubers are stored and subsequently provided to the farmers.
The Director asked the concerned officers to ensure the processing is completed well in time so that the seed could be supplied to the farmers at the right time.
He said every year newer areas are brought under potato cultivation and the demand for quality potato seed is increasing. Keeping in view the growing demand of potato seed, the department is focusing on the development of potato crop under HADP and other potato crop centric programmes.
Director expressed satisfaction over this year’s potato yield. He highlighted the importance of High yielding, disease resistant potato seed varieties.
Earlier Potato development officer Kashmir briefed the Director about the functioning of the plant and the progress on different processing operations.
