The deaths of two teenagers in a tragic road accident at Tengpra Byepass Srinagar has unfolded the negligence parents show in allowing their teenage wards to drive vehicles without licenses and Government’s lackadaisical approach on traffic management that in one way or the other has a direct bearing on the safety of travelers on the roads in Jammu & Kashmir and more so in the twin capital cities Srinagar and Jammu. While stringent punishment against underage driving in view of the rising stunt driving trends growing at an alarming rate among the teenagers in recent years would most proably reduce the intensity of road accident deaths in Jammu & Kashmir, the parents gladly conceding the demands of their teenage wards for any two wheeler or car are to be counseled properly with an intention to reverse the trend of stunt driving on the roads within and outside Srinagar and Jammu the twin capital cities. While banning the entry of students into schools for driving vehicles in minor age and random checking of the travel documents of teenagers are obviously the most stringent actions Government can take against the teenage traffic violators, it is now for the parents to deny their teenage wards the opportunities to drive vehicles without proper driving licenses in their hands. What has gone unnoticed so for is the reckless driving of truck and tipper drivers who are unfortunately responsible for most of the accidents reported day in and day out on the city roads and as well as the inter-district routes. Years ago the Jammu & Kashmir High Court had banned the movement of trucks and tippers within the municipal limits of Srinagar and Jammu the twin capital cities in the day time and restricted their movement only from late evening till early morning hours throughout the night just to reduce the frequency of road accidents but unfortunately that practice has been abandoned.

So it can be said that the implementation of the decision of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on travelling time of trucks and tippers can perhaps prevent occurrence and re-occurrence of Tengpora like tragic road accident deaths. While zero tolerance against underage driving is the most stringent action Government can take to bring down the continuing surge in road accident deaths , the review of the J&K High Court decision on night long permission for movement of trucks and tippers also demands and deserves immediate attention and intervention of the Government at the highest level for the purposes of the safety of the travelers on the roads across Jammu & Kashmir.”
