Ganderbal : Law Society, Department of Law, School of Legal Studies (SLS), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) on Saturday organized the 2nd “Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA) Inter-Semester moot court competition” from November 6 to 7, 2024.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmad Mir, Head and Dean, SLS, said that a Moot Court Competition is essential for anyone aspiring to become an eminent lawyer. He stated that the journey from a “born lawyer” to a “made lawyer” is marked by acquiring the necessary legal skills, particularly in courtroom settings. Prof. Mir underscored the value of both participation and observation in such events, encouraging students to observe closely to gain deeper insights into the legal profession.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice Mr. Vineet Kothari, former acting Chief Justice, Gujarat High Court talked about the growing preference for the legal profession, highlighting that a successful lawyer is not merely one who is well-versed in statutory laws, but also a person of high ethical standing. He stressed the importance of adapting to the evolving needs of society and the significant role that courtroom mannerisms play in shaping a lawyer’s success.
Addressing the participants, Mr. K.D. Rao, Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR emphasized that mooting helps law students develop not only their research and presentation skills, but also their ability to make meaningful connections in the legal field. He encouraged participants to take their mooting skills beyond academic competitions and apply them in real courtrooms. He further stressed the critical need for young, motivated lawyers in the legal profession and how mooting serves as an essential stepping stone in that direction.
Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Registrar, said the Department of Law is one of the premier departments in the university. He encouraged participants to seize such opportunities to learn and express their skills while upholding the professionalism required in the legal field.
The event was started by Dr. Mudasir Bhat, Assistant Prof. and Legal Advisor who welcomed all the participants and said the success of such events are attributed to the able guidance of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath. The event saw participation from students, underscoring the university’s dedication to promote academic excellence and enhancing legal expertise among its community.
The competition began with preliminary knockout and quarterfinals, where eight teams competed, and four teams advanced to the semifinals. The intense rounds culminated in the final showdown, where the top teams faced off for the prestigious title. The winning team included Fiza Assad, Matiha Khan, and Komal Gupta. Dr. Gulafroz Jan, Senior Assistant Prof. proposed the vote of thanks.
