Srinagar: Below is the timeline of the major public events held within and outside Jammu & Kashmir:-
1. Assembly Election Schedule Announced For Jammu And Kashmir: The Election Commission has announced three-phase Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir starting September 18 and concluding with counting on October 4. Approximately 8.8 million voters will cast their ballots across 90 constituencies, including nine newly reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs) and seven for Scheduled Castes (SCs), as in the previous Assembly.
2. Model Code of Conduct Enforced Ahead of Polls: The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday following the announcement of the election schedule. The MCC will apply to all candidates, political parties, and the Union Territory government, as well as the central government regarding any announcements or policy decisions affecting Jammu and Kashmir.
3. Major Police Reshuffle Announced Alongside Election Schedule: On the same day Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the Legislative Assembly elections for Jammu and Kashmir, the Home Department and Jammu and Kashmir Police implemented a major reshuffle. ADGP Nitish Kumar has been appointed Head of CID, relieving DGP RR Swain of additional duties. Several other officers, including IGP Bhim Sen Tuti and various DIGs and SSPs, have been either promoted or transferred.
4. LG Launches Development Projects in Budgam: The Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated and laid the foundation for various developmental projects worth over ₹40 crore in Budgam district today. He also e-inaugurated 40 additional projects and schemes valued at ₹101.66 crore, focusing on urban development and infrastructure. Among the highlights was the new accommodation for Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members at Sheikhpora, built at a cost of ₹6.41 crore.
5. Army Captain Killed in Encounter with Militants in Doda: A fierce encounter between security forces and militants in the Assar area of Doda resulted in the death of an Army Captain and the neutralization of a terrorist. This operation, part of a broader effort to address the recent uptick in violence in the Jammu region, continues as security forces remain active in the Udhampur-Doda-Kishtwar belt.
6. LG Celebrates Independence Day At “Meri Maati Mera Desh” Event: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha participated in the “Meri Maati Mera Desh” event hosted by DD Kashir, commemorating freedom fighters and martyrs on the eve of the 78th Independence Day. The event, featuring patriotic performances by folk artists, highlighted the progress made in Jammu and Kashmir and praised the efforts of the J&K Police, Armed Forces, and CAPFs in fostering peace and social justice.
7. BJP Expands Campaign Efforts In J&K: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir by opening 44 new election offices across Jammu Province, including one for Kashmir Displaced Persons (KPs). The offices were virtually inaugurated by J&K BJP President Ravinder Raina. The BJP also plans nine major rallies, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading five and Union Home Minister Amit Shah heading four.
8. University Of Kashmir Achieves High Ranking In Nirf 2024: The University of Kashmir (KU) has achieved a notable milestone in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2024, securing 14th place among State Public Universities (SPUs) in India. KU also ranks among the top 50 universities nationwide, reinforcing its status as a leading higher education institution.
9. LG Congratulates Top Institutions for NIRF Rankings: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha congratulated the University of Jammu, University of Kashmir, NIT Srinagar, IIT Jammu, IIM Jammu, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, SKUAST Jammu, and SKUAST Kashmir for their top rankings in the recent NIRF Ranking.
10. SKIMS Issues New Guidelines for CME Programs: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, has issued new guidelines for Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs. These guidelines emphasize evidence-based content and the exclusion of promotions, focusing on academic enrichment and professional development.
