PM’s meeting with JK leaders ‘positive’ step; Centre must restore statehood before assembly polls: Karan Singh

New Delhi, July 17: On recent incidents of terror attacks in the Jammu region, senior Congress leader Dr. Karan Singh said on Wednesday that it is a matter of grave concern and further stated that the terrorists have now started to focus on Jammu.

“There is no doubt that it is a matter of grave concern. For years, terrorists executed their actions in the Kashmir valley. With great difficulty and courage, they were brought under control…It seems that now they have started focusing on Jammu,” he said.

Singh further suggested the reattachment of the Jammu Division of the Army with the Northern Command located in Nagrota from the Western Command to make one single unit.

“We have lost several of our jawans and people in the last 6 months… This is a very serious matter…This means that the administration doesn’t have full control over the situation. This should not happen…I have a suggestion: Jammu Division of the Army has always been with Udhampur–with Northern Command. A few years ago, it was separated and attached to Western Command, which is quite far away from Jammu…I am not an expert but I think if it is brought to Nagrota again, it will be one single unit,” he said.

On Tuesday, July 16, four Indian Army soldiers, including an officer, were killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district.

“Four Indian Army soldiers, including an officer, have been killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in the Doda area of Jammu and Kashmir. The operations are still going on,” defence officials said.

According to officials, a joint operation was launched by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday evening following an exchange of fire with terrorists in the Dessa area of the district.

They said that additional troops have been called in to tighten the cordon.

Earlier on Monday, July 15, Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered old-rusted arms and ammunition from a terrorist hideout in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The recovery items include 30 rounds of AK-47, one magazine of AK-47 rifle, and one HE-36 hand grenade, as per the officials.

“During the search and cordon operation, the police party recovered old-rusted arms and ammunition from the Dalantop area of Shikari,” officials said in a press release.

This comes against the backdrop of the recent terror attacks in the Jammu region, including the terror attack on the army convoy in Kathua. The encounters in Doda and Udhampur were also in the Jammu region.
