“Water shortage does not concern only domestic consumers but it equally concerns commercial establishments also particularly hoteliers in peak tourist periods amid commencement of the annual Amaranth Yatra across Jammu & Kashmir.”

Water scarcity triggered by heat waves in peak summer months haunts people more frequently and intensely in cities and towns than villages in Jammu & Kashmir. Amid ongoing heat wave the unprecedented rise in the complaints of water scarcity are not unfortunately taken as serious as they need to be taken in view of the rise in temperatures equally in urban and rural parts of Jammu & Kashmir. While in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir Valley water is supplied in tankers to residential colonies hit by the water shortage, the authorities unfortunately don’t pay heed to complaints of water shortage in semi urban and rural parts of both Kashmir Valley and as well as Jammu division. Delays and disruptions in supply of water to residential areas and public facilities like hospitals and schools consequently put to risk the lives of people. Keeping in view the fact that water shortage can result even in a worst form of humanitarian crisis, the review of the operation of water supply demands and deserves an urgent attention and intervention of the Jal Shakti Department. After all it is for the Jal Shakti Department to take corrective measures wherever needed to ensure hassle free supply of water to hapless populations besides hospitals and schools across Jammu & Kashmir. Water shortage does not concern only domestic consumers but it equally concerns commercial establishments also particularly hoteliers in peak tourist periods amid commencement of the annual Amaranth Yatra across Jammu & Kashmir. What matters the most is the fact that water shortage is not only about supply of drinking water facilities but it is also about accessibility of farmers to irrigation facilities in a situation and scenario wherein farming season interestingly coincides with the peak tourist season in Jammu & Kashmir.

“In view of the rising complaints of water shortage amid intensifying heat wave administrative wisdom demands an urgent review of the supply and regulation of drinking water facilities much before the occurrence of water crisis in one or several parts of Kashmir Valley or Jammu division in commencing peak summer periods. With heat wave changing Srinagar city and major towns almost into furnaces, the adequate comprehensive mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitate immediate intervention from the Jal Shakti Department for the purposes of reducing the complaints of water shortage otherwise rising unprecedentedly in peak summer months since last several years in Kashmir Valley.”

Chaos and confusion over simmering water crisis is as good a reality in Jammu & Kashmir as it is in most parts of North India like Delhi, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh presently reeling under unprecedented heat wave. In view of the rising complaints of water shortage amid intensifying heat wave administrative wisdom demands an urgent review of the supply and regulation of drinking water facilities much before the occurrence of water crisis in one or several parts of Kashmir Valley or Jammu division in commencing peak summer periods. With heat wave changing Srinagar city and major towns almost into furnaces, the adequate comprehensive mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitate immediate intervention from the Jal Shakti Department for the purposes of reducing the complaints of water shortage otherwise rising unprecedentedly in peak summer months since last several years in Kashmir Valley.
