Erstwhile Doda popularly known as chenab valley is full of antiquities which has been unearthed, comprising an array of inscriptions crafted on diverse mediums such as copper plates, sanads (deeds), grants, firmans (royal decrees), and letters. These artifacts bear testimony to the rich scripts employed throughout history, including Brahmi, Sharda, Takri, Persian, and Devnagri. Notably, within the Takri records lies mention of dhoks like Nargowari, which gives colours to this historical site. Its beauty and profound historical importance continue to attract researchers and visitors all togther, It offer glimpses into the past that are both mesmerizing and enlightening. PK Koul a researcher par excellence has undertaken the task of assessing the antiquity of the Jammu region in his monograph. Within his comprehensive study, he examines around 150 items of inscriptional records, copper plates, Sanads (deeds), Pattas (leases), Grants, official Certificates, and Firmans (royal decrees). These artifacts predominantly originate from the valleys of Chenab within the Doda mountains. Koul’s research includes Nargowari among these historical treasures, emphasizing its significance as a site of profound historical importance, thus enriching our understanding of the areas past. Nargowari is recorded in ancient Takri documents which makes it a place worth exploring and a lasting tourism destination. Nargowari’s historical significance can be traced back to ancient times when the land was leased to local individuals by Rajas and Maharajas. The surrounding villages—Bhatyas, Jakyas, Gondow, Budhili, Malikpura, and Chanyas—each contribute to the cultural richness and historical view of the area. These villages, with their unique traditions and historical backgrounds, enhance the overall view of Nargowari. In Bhalessa, numerous historical treasures await discovery. Sites like Bhatyas, Moti Bagra, and Mashood and Bhrami Top are evidence to the area’s beauty showcasing ancient Dhoks that offer a glimpse into the past. The historic Mehad Dhar adds even more depth to the area’s history with its ancient roots and stories passed down through generations. Reaching Nargowari is an adventure in itself. The journey to this hidden gem begins on the Thathri Kilhotran road, passing through Bhatyas Malikpura. Despite its historical importance and breathtaking beauty, Nargowari has not yet been fully developed by the tourism authorities. This lack of development has kept Nargowari off the main tourist trail, preserving its untouched beauty but also limiting its potential as a major tourist destination. To unlock Nargowari’s full potential, it needs to be recognized and preserved by relevant authorities. The surrounding areas add to Nargowari’s charm, with nearby locations like Chilly Meadows, Khurnal, Bharmi Top, and Gasheer Top enhancing its appeal. Each of these places possesses unique natural beauty and historical significance, making the region around Nargowari an attractive destination for visitors. These spots offer a range of experiences, from scenic landscapes to historical exploration, appealing to both nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Historians such as Pritam Krishan Koul have documented the rich history of Nargowari. In his book, “Antiquities of Kangra and Chenab,” Koul provides detailed insights into Nargowari’s heritage, shedding light on its cultural and historical significance.
