Mothers’ day is celebrated annually but children are little taught about the respect for the mother in schools in their childhood days. While thanksgiving and acknowledgement of debt and gratitude are the first duties which a beneficiary owes to the benefactor, the parents are the palpable cause for our existence as we grow under their protection and upbringing. Mothers in particular have undoubtedly a central role in mental, physical and psychological development of their children. So by all probabilities mother has a central role in the development of strong parent-child relationships. While it is moral, social and religious obligation of children to treat their mothers with kindness and utmost respect in their old age, It is human nature that mothers in their old age are thrilled with joy and happiness to see their children trying to repay the love and affection they have given them during childhood. Children not getting an opportunity to look after their mothers can make it up by praying for them with the spirit of putting in their best to serve them to their utmost capacities and pray for them at the same time.
“Islam places great emphasis on the duties, rights and obligations not only on the relationship between a husband and wife and their relationship with their children as parents, but also on their relationship with their own parents too with the purposes of making life blissful and rewarding for children, their parents, grandparents and grandchildren and future generations too. Since the spirit of mothers day lies in respect and love for parents, it is for the youth to show the spirit of treating their mothers well in their old age in view of it’s great rewards in the eternal world.
Since physical weaknesses are part of old age it is duty of the children to look after their mothers with love and care the way mothers take care of them in their childhood. . Regarding the status of mothers, the Prophet (SAW) said: “Paradise lies under the feet of the mother,” (Nasai). Regarding the status of fathers, the Prophet (SAW) said: “The father is the most central door of all doors of Paradise; it is up to you that you may lose it or protect it.” (Tirmizi) Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates: “Three times the Holy Prophet (SAW) declared, ‘May his nose bite the dust, may his nose bite the dust.’ (This is an Arabic phrase used to indicate that the person about whom one is talking has been disgraced and failed in his life).
