New Delhi, Apr 25: In a session at the United Nations Security Council, yesterday, Russia deployed its veto power to thwart a crucial draft resolution designed to forestall the proliferation of weapons in space. This move marked the first-ever failure to adopt a resolution addressing the burgeoning arms race beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
The draft resolution, jointly proposed by Japan and the United States, garnered substantial support with 13 member states in favour, while China chose to abstain. The resolution aimed to galvanize nations, particularly those possessing advanced space capabilities, to actively uphold the peaceful utilization of outer space and deter any encroachment into an arms race therein.
Key provisions of the draft entailed a call for nations to abstain from actions conflicting with the objective of preserving space for peaceful purposes, as well as adherence to existing treaties safeguarding international peace and cooperation.
However, the resolution met a decisive setback as the Russian Federation wielded its veto power, with China abstaining from the vote.
