Quito: Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, for whose detention police stormed the Mexican Embassy in the country, has been transferred from prison to a military hospital of the city of Guayaquil on Monday, Ecuadorian media reported.
Glas is reportedly in an induced coma. The condition might have been caused by an overdose of sedatives or antidepressants, the Teleamazonas broadcaster said.
Later, the Primicias news portal reported that Glas is in stable condition.
At the same time, a source in the opposition Citizen Revolution Movement party told Sputnik that the Ecuadorian government does not disclose Glas’ whereabouts or his condition.
“No one, not even his brother, knows exactly where he is; it looks like he’s in the naval hospital, but they haven’t confirmed this to us,” the source said.
Glas will return to prison in the next few hours, the Pichincha radio reported, adding that his health problems could have been caused by taking anesthetics to relieve severe pain in the spine.
