In the culturally rich region of Kashmir, the pre-dawn meal holds profound significance, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. To ensure that everyone is awake and prepared for this essential meal before the fast begins again, a unique tradition has emerged: the role of Human Alarm (Sehar Khan).
Origins and Cultural Significance: “Sehar Khan,” a term derived from Kashmiri language, refers to individuals who undertake the responsibility of waking up their communities before dawn during Ramadan. Similarly, the term “Human Alarm” reflects the same tradition in English. This practice dates back centuries and is deeply ingrained in Kashmiri culture. In the absence of modern alarm clocks and electronic devices, communities relied on these individuals to ensure everyone was awake and prepared for the pre-dawn meal.
The Role of Human Alarm (Sehar Khan): Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) plays a pivotal role in Kashmiri communities during Ramadan. Armed with drums or other loud instruments, they traverse neighborhoods and streets, creating rhythmic sounds to awaken residents from their slumber. Their timely intervention ensures that individuals have enough time to partake in Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, before the fast commences at sunrise.

“As symbols of communal solidarity and religious observance, Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) play crucial roles in ensuring that the spirit of Ramadan is upheld within Kashmiri communities. In their rhythmic beats, one can hear the echoes of tradition and the enduring legacy of communal service”.

Community Engagement and Tradition: Beyond its practical function, the tradition of Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) fosters a sense of community engagement and solidarity. The rhythmic beats of the drum not only wake people from their sleep but also serve as a reminder of communal unity and shared religious observance. Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) become revered figures within the community, embodying the spirit of service and dedication to communal well-being.
Evolution and Continuation: In contemporary times, with the advent of modern technology, the role of Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) may have evolved. However, in many parts of Kashmir, this tradition continues to thrive, preserving its cultural and religious significance. Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) remain integral parts of Kashmiri Ramadan traditions, symbolizing the enduring values of unity, faith, and communal harmony.
Conclusion: The tradition of Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) exemplifies the rich tapestry of Kashmiri culture and its deep-rooted customs. As symbols of communal solidarity and religious observance, Human Alarm (Sehar Khan) play crucial roles in ensuring that the spirit of Ramadan is upheld within Kashmiri communities. In their rhythmic beats, one can hear the echoes of tradition and the enduring legacy of communal service.
