In the modern context, marriages have become a financial strain on families, particularly placing a heavy burden on the bride’s father. The pressure to conform to societal expectations, including extravagant ceremonies and extensive dowries, often leads to financial hardship. This departure from the simplicity advocated by Islam not only contradicts the Sunnah but also contributes to societal disparities and financial stress. As believers, we must recognize the burden placed on the bride’s father in contemporary marriage practices. It is time to shift away from the materialistic mindset and return to the simplicity advocated by Islam. By doing so, we honor the Sunnah, strengthen the bonds of our community, and pave the way for a more spiritually fulfilling union. If change is to happen, let it begin with us, taking the initiative to uphold the teachings of our Prophet and the beauty of a modest Nikah in the face of modern challenges. Nikah, the sacred union between a man and a woman, stands as one of the noblest Sunnahs established by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.). As believers of Allah and members of the Ummah, we are obligated to follow the Prophet’s teachings, emphasizing that Nikah brings believers closer to Imaan and should be conducted with utmost simplicity, devoid of pomp and extravagance. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) wisely stated, “A woman is married for four things; her wealth, family status, beauty, and religion. Choose a religious woman if you want to prosper” (Sahih Bukhari). This highlights the significance of prioritizing religious virtues over worldly attributes in the selection of a life partner.

Furthermore, the Prophet urged believers to consider a suitor’s character and religious commitment when someone with satisfactory qualities seeks to marry their daughter. He warned against neglecting such requests, emphasizing the potential for corruption and great evil on earth (Tirmidhi). Despite these clear guidelines from the Qur’an and the Prophet’s teachings, contemporary practices often deviate from the simplicity advocated by Islam. In the modern era, marriages have transformed into burdens, laden with societal expectations and materialistic pursuits. The essence of Nikah is overshadowed by elaborate ceremonies and extravagant expenditures. Islam encourages a simple and meaningful approach to marriage, as outlined in Surah Israa; Verse 26-27: “And give the relative his right, and also the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.” The Sunnah way involves performing Nikah in a Mosque, surrounded by close relatives, with a focus on aiding the less fortunate. Unfortunately, we frequently succumb to societal pressures, engaging in elaborate and costly marriage rituals that stray from the essence of Islam. It is crucial for the Ummah to reflect on these teachings and share the message of simplicity in Nikah with others. Let us strive to maintain the beauty of a straightforward Nikah, setting an example for the entire community.
