Anantnag: Government forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lahicharge to disperse demonstrators who were protesting against fresh case of braid chopping incident today.
The incident occurred even after police announced a reward of Rs 3 lakhs for anyone who will provide any information about the culprits involved in braid cutting in the valley, where special helplines were established in all districts.
The trouble started when a woman, mother of three children, reported that her braid was chopped in village Neehama on the border between Anantnag and Kulgam districts today.
The victim was admitted to local Public Health Center (PHC) after she was shocked and fainted.
Hundreds of people, including women, hit the streets at Lal Chowk Anantnag protesting against the fresh case of braid chopping. Alleging that police has failed to stop unabated braid chopping incidents, the agitators wanted to move towards other areas.
Security forces and state police personnel deployed in the area immediately swung into action, leading to clashes. The demonstrators pelted stones on security forces disrupting business and other activities.
Security forces burst teargas shells and also resorted to lathicharge to restore peace. However, demonstrators spread to more areas.
The district administration has recently constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to nab the culprits behind these incidents.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has also expressed concern over the incidents of braid cutting.
The opposition leaders besides separatists have also joined the issue and alleged that people, particularly women and young girls are feeling insecure and are hesitating to move out of their homes.
