Kishtwar : Government Degree College (GDC) Kishtwar, in collaboration with the Jammu Kashmir Science Technology and Innovation Council (JKST&IC), on Wednesday hosted a symposium and poster-making competition on the theme “Global Science for Global Wellbeing.” The event aimed to provide a platform to the students to delve into the intersection of science and global challenges.
The symposium and poster-making competition were conducted under the guidance of Dr. Jyoti Parihar, the College Principal.
Dr. Sehrish Gazal presided over the event and delivered the welcome address, extending a warm welcome to all participants and introducing the esteemed jury members.
Shruti Khanna, representing the Jammu Kashmir Science and Technology Department, joined virtually as the guest of honour.
In her inaugural address, Shruti highlighted JKST&IC’s efforts in promoting scientific curiosity among students and the public. She commended GDC Kishtwar for organizing this event and expressed the department’s commitment to future collaborations with the college for similar programs.
Participating in the symposium, students presented insightful discussions on pressing global issues, ranging from the necessity of global science contributions for overall wellbeing to specific areas requiring global scientific attention, such as healthcare, pandemics, climate change, and sustainable agriculture for global food security.
Following the symposium, a poster-making competition allowed students to creatively express their views on global wellbeing. Both the symposium and poster-making competition were judged by a panel of experts, including Dr. Ashaq Hussain, Prof. Romana Akhter, and Prof. Waseem Rasheed.
Dr. Ashaq Hussain delivered a comprehensive presentation on the importance of global science contributions and the role of scientific knowledge in addressing global challenges. He encouraged students to actively participate in such events as platforms for sharing their perspectives.
Prof. Romana Akhter discussed scientific contributions to global welfare, while Prof. Waseem Rasheed shed light on the necessity of global collaborations to promote global wellbeing.
Principal Dr. Jyoti Parihar, the chief guest of the occasion, emphasized the need for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to address modern-day threats impacting global wellbeing, such as pandemics and food security. She also stressed the importance of preserving biodiversity for the wellbeing of our planet. Dr. Parihar thanked JKST&IC for their financial support in organizing the event.
A prize distribution ceremony recognized the winners of both the poster and symposium competitions. Abroo Wajid, Mutaqeen-ul-Islam and Tanuja Thakur secured the first, second, and third prizes in the symposium, while Ayesha Kousar, Mamta Kumari, Anamika, and Sahila Parveen secured the first, second, and third prizes in the poster-making competition. The winners received cash prizes of Rs 1000, 700, and 500, along with trophies, while consolation prizes were awarded to all participants.
Mementos were presented to the jury members and the chief guest, and the event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sarita Parihar. Refreshments were provided to all participants.
