Srinagar: In a landmark event held under the banner of the Meri Maati Mera Desh Programme, DC Kupwara Ayushi Sudan accompanied by SSP Kupwara on Monday inaugurated the Kupwara Police Cricket League in the picturesque Galizoo Sports Stadium in Kupwara town.
According to a statement issued from Zonal Police Headquarters Srinagar, this league transcends the boundaries of cricket, aiming to ignite unity, pay homage to fallen heroes, and empower the youth of the region by keeping them away from drugs. This collective gesture marked the initiation of a captivating journey, brimming with enthralling cricket showdowns and shared camaraderie.
At its heart, the Kupwara Police Cricket League serves an elevated purpose – honoring the courageous Police Martyrs of the district while channelling the vibrant energy of the youth into constructive athletic pursuits, steering them clear of the clutches of narcotics substance abuse.
The league has drawn significant participation, boasting 16 premier teams from across the valley converging for this grand sporting spectacle. A demanding itinerary of 31 matches will scrutinize the mettle and teamwork of these teams, showcasing their cricketing prowess on the grand stage.
Emerging victorious in the tournament not only brings home a coveted cash prize of Rupees 1.5 lakh but also secures the prestigious championship trophy. The runners-up, on the other hand, will be rewarded with Rupees 75,000 and a trophy of their own. Players are also poised to compete for a range of esteemed awards awaiting them.
The inaugural clash pitting SKCC Galoora against the Coaching Centre Cricket Club Kupwara electrified the atmosphere, generating tangible excitement. A spirited audience, drawn from both the district and beyond, united to witness the unfolding of this monumental event. In the inaugural match of the league, winning toss and electing to bat first, SKCC Galoora scored a mammoth total of 215 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs with the help of a brilliant 148 in 71 balls scored by Sajid Amla. The CC Kupwara could score only 149/5 in 20 overs and lost the match by 66 runs. Sajid Amla was declared Man of the match for his century and also taking two wickets for his team.
The occasion was also graced by the presence of Reyaz Mir, Chairman Municipal Council along with the unwavering support of event supporters Mir Feroze, Zubair Ahmad Bhat, Shabir Ahmad and Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh alongside Police and Civil Officers of the district.
