Jammu: The Department of Linguistics &Literature at School of Humanities and Liberal Arts, Cluster University of Jammu was abuzz with excitement as the Vice Chancellor Professor Bechan Lal paid a comprehensive visit to assess the dynamic curricular activities and groundbreaking work taking place within the language laboratory.
The visit aimed at gaining insights into the progress made in the study and preservation of regional languages to meet the University’s commitment to linguistic diversity and academic excellence.
The Vice Chancellor’s tour began with a warm welcome by the Dean Faculty of Arts – Dr. Monika Sharma, HoD Dr. Reena Salaria and the faculty members and students, who eagerly shared their enthusiasm and commitment for the promotion and study of Linguistics of local languages of Jammu province.
Dr. Ranvjiay Singh (Dean Student’s Welfare) and Dr. Kuldeep Sign (HoD, Music ) were present at the occasion. The Department of Linguistics & Literature has gained a reputation for fostering an academic environment where linguistic research and cultural preservation coexist and converge. This visit served as a testament to the dedication of the faculty and the students of the department.
In the language laboratory, the Vice Chancellor delved into the intricacies of the curricular work and research centred on several regional languages, including Dogri, Pahari, Gojri, Punjabi, and Poonchi. The expert Linguistic Faculty Dr. Farooq Ahmad Mir apprised Hon’ble Vice Chancellor about the innovative techniques that are being employed to preserve, document, and explore the nuances of these languages.
During the tour of the language laboratory, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bechan Lal engaged in conversations with students who are working on various linguistic projects pertaining to making of bi-lingual pictorial dictionaries and grammars for local languages. The students were eager to share their findings and discuss the challenges they encounter while studying and analyzing these languages. The revered Vice Chancellor expressed his admiration for the dedication of the departmental faculty, and students and underscored the importance of preserving these languages as invaluable cultural assets.
In an impromptu address to the faculty and students, the Vice Chancellor lauded the Department of Linguistics & Literature for its remarkable efforts. He emphasized the role of universities in safeguarding and promoting linguistic diversity, not only for academic purposes but also as a means of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The visit concluded on a positive note, with the Vice Chancellor expressing his commitment to supporting the department’s initiatives further. He promised to allocate appropriate resources to enhance the language laboratory’s capabilities and expand the scope of research and documentation. This promising commitment resonated deeply with the Linguistic community, inspiring renewed energy, and dedication to the study of languages.
