Srinagar: In a unique display of communal harmony, Sunnis in Srinagar’s Downtown area were seen distributing refreshments and beverages to Shia ‘Azadars’ on the occasion of Ashura – the 10th Muharram.
Witnesses said that a group of people from the Sunni community on Saturday gathered near Srinagar’s Alamgari Bazar and disturbed water and other drinks to those part of the Ashura procession.
Mukhtar Ahmad, who was distributing refreshments, said that the ‘Youm-e-Ashura’ is not only for the Shia community but all Muslims.
Mohammad Owais, another local, said, “We are distributing drinking water and other refreshments in memory of the Martyrs of Karbala. The battle of Karbala reminds us about the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions.”
Meanwhile, the Shias of the area expressed gratitude to the administration for ensuring “quality arrangements” and thanked the Lieutenant Governor for reaching out to them on this significant day
