KU organises talk on socio-religious harmony

Srinagar: To inspire youth towards high moral and ethical values and to address various social evils especially drug abuse, the School of Law, University of Kashmir organised a talk on ‘Kashmir & Socio-Religious Harmony’.
According to a statement issue from Centre for Public Relations University of Kashmir, Srinagar Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan in her address stated that our moral values are still intact and that the youth are responsible for upholding the Kashmiri values and traditions. She said the event gave an opportunity to students to understand the Kashmiri tradition and culture of social values and religious harmony so that they imbibe such values and traditions for better future.
“Our youth are everywhere courtesy their hardwork and high moral standards but they have a great duty towards nation-building,” she said.
“We need to train our students and orient them towards better and constructive areas,” she said while appreciating the student speakers who deliberated on different themes highlighting and promoting social peace and religious harmony.
In his special address, General Officer Commanding, 31 HQ Sub-Area, Major General PBS Lamba said to have social peace and harmony, the glorious past needs to be rekindled for youth as the Kashmir is known for, hospitality, togetherness and brotherhood.
“People should look up to the university and nothing better that the youth here will shape and define the future of the country,” he said.
He said the socio-religious harmony is deep-rooted in the people of Kashmir and no one can harm it.
He urged the youth, especially girls to lead the society by being honest and selfless as such attributes keep one motivated and confident.
In his address, Col. A.K. Mor, Commanding Officer, 150 T.A. said the generation next will guide the country forward.
He said while practicing, preaching and propagating religions, the societal progress should be our prime focus and that we must maintain the religious sanctity of all countrymen.
Dean Academic Affairs, University of Kashmir, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Masoodi said no force can shatter our faith in socio-religious harmony and that socio-religious harmony is rooted deep in the ethos of our society.
Dean Research, University of Kashmir, Prof. Irshad Ahmad Nawchoo said that religion is the backbone of our ethos and we should enlighten our progeny and educate them about the Kashmiri culture and religious value system.
Registrar, University of Kashmir, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir said that religion has a functional value as religion gives meaning to life and it is prime agency of social control.
Earlier, Dean and Head, School of Law, Prof. Mohammad Hussain while thanking the Vice Chancellor for facilitating such programmes also thanked Kashmir Jurists trust and the faculty and students of the School of Law for taking the initiative.
On the occasion, Advocate Kanwal Wangnoo from the Kashmir Jurists Trust said there was no curriculum to teach us socio-religious harmony and that is what percolates down our society.
Terming religion a way to connect, he said, “We do not need lectures or books to revive the old traditions as the values are within us that we inherited from our forefathers.”
Assistant Professor, School of Law, University of Kashmir, Hakim Yasir Abas conducted the proceedings of the event, while Associate Prof & Academic Coordinator, School of Law, University of Kashmir, Dr Shahnaz proposed the vote of thanks.
