Jammu: In continuation to its initiatives for environmental protection,, Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee on Tuesday launched an awareness campaign to spread doorstep awareness about E-waste management among consumers and bulk consumers across the districts of Jammu Division.
The launch was marked by flagging off the Mobile E-waste Collection van by K. Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary, J&K Pollution Control Committee. The doorstep awareness drive has been initiated in collaboration with JKPCC Authorized Dismantler for E-waste, VRG Groups, Jammu.
Sat Paul, Regional Director, JKPCC Jammu; J.N. Sharma, EE, JKPCC; Nodal officer E-waste, JKPCC, Jammu, Anuradha and all Divisional officers/scientists among other senior officers of the Committee were also present.
The awareness cum collection campaign shall be carried out in all the districts of Jammu province till December, 2023.
Member Secretary, JKPCC appreciated the initiative taken by officials of the PCC and M/s VRG Groups to conduct the awareness drive in Jammu in an effective manner. He highlighted the fact that India has emerged as the 3rd largest contributor of E-waste generated across the globe, thereby making it the most serious cause of concern from an environmental point of view. He also highlighted that the lack of proper collection mechanism and unscientific disposal is a major contributory factor for environmental and health hazards caused by E-waste & plastic waste.
He also noted that the electronic and electrical items such as computers, televisions, mobile phones etc. on completion of their useful life are being discarded rapidly and contribute to the huge quantum of E-waste.
Regional Director, Sat Paul pointed out that consumers should play a responsible role in ensuring safe collection and disposal of all types of Electronic waste, so as to ensure scientific management of these resources, which may otherwise cause irreversible damage to the environment, if disposed of otherwise. He requested the general public to co-operate in making this campaign a success and ensure safe channelization of E-waste.
