Jammu: Believed to be the smallest baby ever reported in Jammu and Kashmir, a team of doctors headed by renowned neonatologist, Dr Vikas Mahajan have saved 600 grams in weight, a baby boy born at just 24 weeks gestation.
The baby has been discharged from SDDM Hospital in Channi Himmat Jammu after a remarkable recovery.
Dr Mahajan said that the baby was born to a couple who had lost two previous babies due to prematurity.
“The baby had multiple complications, including immature lungs, brain, heart and gut, and required ventilator support for 50 days,” said the neonatologist, who treated the baby.
“He faced several challenges during the course of treatment and had severe respiratory distress and was at a high risk of bleeding, infection and brain damage,” said Dr Mahajan adding that he needed blood transfusions and medications to stabilize his condition.
The hospital also provided financial assistance to the family and the baby was discharged from the hospital with a weight of 2.3 kg at 2.5 months of age.
“The baby’s survival was a miracle, as the chances of survival for babies born before 24 weeks are very low,” added Dr Mahajan and called him a fighter, who has defied all odds.
“We are happy that he is going home healthy and safe,” said the Doctor.
