DC directs officers to map hotspots so that strict action is taken against peddlers

Budgam : In order to discuss the action plan to curb the drug abuse and narcotic trade in Budgam, a District level committee of Narco Coordination centre (NCORD) was held on Monday under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Budgam, S F Hamid at DC office complex, here.

SSP Budgam, TahirSaleem Khan convened the meeting and threw light on the drug abuse, its causes and prevention. He briefed about the measures Budgam Police has been taking for prevention of drug abuse like carrying out frequent awareness rallies and conducting awareness programmes/seminars in schools, colleges and during Thana Diwas at Police Stations throughout the district.

He said on the Control part, stringent legal action is being taken against those found indulging in drug peddling. Besides, Rehabilitation part includes counseling and providing treatment to those who have become victims of drug abuse.

The DC took feedback from officers of the last NCORD and laid emphasis upon taking effective measures against drug abuse in the district. He enjoined upon the officers to ensure zero tolerance towards drug abuse and stressed upon better coordination among various departments and implementation of innovative ideas in controlling drug abuse.

S F Hamid further briefed the officers of Excise, Drug Control and Health Department to take all measures in controlling the drug menace.

He directed officers of Health and Social Welfare departments to organise Road shows, NukadNataks and special orientation programmes so that the public is made aware regarding hazards of drugs at large.

The DC also emphasised on conducting awareness camps in schools and colleges on mass scale to sensitize the youth about hazards and ill effects of consuming drugs.

Threadbare discussion was made about control of cultivation of poppy and all stakeholders were advised to do scientific mapping of those areas of district Budgam where such cultivation is being done.

The DC said in order to combat this rising societal problem – multi-pronged rehabilitation, counseling and guidance policy is being implemented on ground to monitor drug abuse and take remedial measures to curb the menace.

He directed officers to involve youth clubs at panchayat level and sought cooperation from the families particularly from parents to overcome the menace among the youth which also leads to other social evils and crimes.

He said religious heads and parents have an important role to keep the youngsters away from the use of drugs and also the family support for the affected people could lead them towards normal life.

Officers were directed to make widespread publicity among masses regarding the harmful use of Narcotic and other harmful drugs.

Besides, SSP TahirSaleem Khan, ADC Dr. Nasir, CEO, DFO TT Division, Medical Superintendent DH, DSWO, District Information Officer, SDPOs , Assistant Drug Controller, Excise and Taxation Officer, District Drug Controller were present in the meeting.
