Stinky dumping site at Achan: SMC’s growing negligence

The cleanliness in Srinagar city is not rated too high in Swachh Bharat Mission and as such a lot needs to be done to improve cleanliness in the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir to make it a fit case for Swachh Survekshan award in coming years. The administration of Srinagar Municipal Corporation needs to adopt the cleanliness model of Indore city which has been declared country’s cleanest city for the sixth consecutive time this year.  Forget about making Srinagar one of the cleanest cities of the country the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is not taking care of even the Achan dumping site from which bad smell is spreading to adjoining areas due to delay in the use of chemicals. In a sorry state of affairs bad smells coming out from the Achan garbage dumping site are spreading deep into the interiors of Srinagar city due to the increasing negligence of the authorities of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in using chemicals that stops the spread of the bad smell from Achan garbage dumping site to the residential areas lying in it’s vicinity. Further delay in using chemicals at the Achan dumping  site by the authorities of Srinagar Municipal Corporation(SMC) could force the populations of adjoining areas to migrate to the  areas far from even the outskirts of Srinagar city. While authorities at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) are not taking seriously the cleanliness initiatives seriously , they  can’t expect people to show seriousness in any cleanliness drive which they may initiate for improving the garbage disposal management system. While the waste disposal management has to be a priority for any civic body of any city the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) can’ t change the dreams of making Srinagar the cleanest city of the country into a reality without fixing priorities with urgency for  both garbage lifting and as well as garbage disposal management system.  Garbage disposal management system can’t be reduced to collection of garbage from households and commercial establishments but the disposal of garbage at an isolated garbage dumping site through scientific means and methods is the bigger part of the garbage disposal management system in any city of any country and same holds good for the authorities at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).

The sense of responsibility and accountability missing at the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is the cause of all ills that ail the garbage disposal management system in Srinagar. Garbage disposal management system if not regulated well from the office of Administrative Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Department would not only bring into disrepute the garbage disposal management system of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) but it would further complicate the scenario of sanitation and cleanliness in Srinagar sufficient enough to attract criticism and condemnation from top environmental watchdog of the country the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Segregating the waste can ease the process of the disposal of the waste at the selected garbage dumping site but delays and extended delays in the use of chemicals stopping spread of bad smell from garbage dumps can complicate the process of the disposal of the waste at the dumping sites.
