Jammu : JK Pollution Control Committee, Jammu and Jammu Municipal Corporation have decided to devise an effective mechanism for implementation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules, 2016 and to curb the menace of Polythene Carry Bags below 75 microns in the municipal limits of Jammu City.
In this regard a meeting was held between the authorities of twin organizations, here the other day. Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Chander Mohan Gupta said that the Jammu Municipal Corporation was striving for “Clean Jammu Green Jammu” and effective steps have been taken for management of municipal solid waste in the municipal limits of Jammu. He intimated that JMC has ensured door to door collection of household waste in specially designed vehicles and dispatch the same to the facility for its better management. He stressed upon the need to create awareness among the citizens for segregation of the waste, as 70 to 80 percent household waste is dry waste and can be easily converted into manure. But when it mixes with wet waste due to ignorance or unhealthy approach of peoples, it become difficult to get it segregated and whole waste have to be sent landfill site for burial.
Chairperson, JK Pollution Control Committee, Dr, Neelu Gera, said that in view of NGT directions, it was imperative for every Government agency to play its part effectively for the implementation of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. She apprised that in the past huge penalty has been imposed on Municipal Committees of Ramban, Udhampur, Kathua, Bandipora, Sopore and Katra on slackness on their part in the implementation of the directions issued by the NGT on implementation of MSW Rules, 2016. She also appealed Mayor, JMC to take effective steps to curb the menace of Polythene Carry Bags below 75 microns.
Due to its fewer prizes, it is being used by small shopkeepers, vendors, rehariwalasetc and is used for throwing the household waste in water bodies around the cities, which is the cause of pollution in these water bodies. She said that, while issuing license, shopkeepers, vendors, rehariwalas be asked to put a sticker on their place that polythene carry bags below 75 microns are not used here and defaulters be booked for token punishment, so that a precedence be set up for others.
Chairman, Swatch Bharat Mission, Hardeep Singh Mankotia appreciated the measure suggested by the Chairperson, JK PCC and said that JMC was working on a campaign to involve school children in Swatch Bharat Mission, to spread awareness in every house through the medium of school children.
