BGSBU Celebrates world Water Day

Rajouri: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri celebrated world water day. Prof. Akbar Masood, Vice Chancellor of the University in his message said that the main focus of World Water Day is to enable the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 which is water and sanitation for all by 2030 and since groundwater is the largest source of fresh and usable water in the world, therefore, it must be managed and valued. Prof. Akbar mentioned that exploring, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population.
On the occasion a symposium on the theme Saving water for sustainable tourism was organised by Centre for Hospitality and Tourism. Dr. Danish Iqbal Raina Deputy Director Centre for Hospitality and Tourism deliberatd upon the themevofvthe symposium and highlighted the importance of water conservation for sustainable tourism development. He mentioned that tourism infrastructure should fully embracing smart technologies, using automatic systems for water conservation and must opt for water recycling for irrigation, the adoption of native flora in gardening, and the collection of rainwater for ecological vegetable gardens. Faculty members and students of the centre participated in the symposium and put forward their views. On the occasion, a special online lecture was organised by the Environment Sciences. Professor Lalit M. Tewari, Department of Botany, Kumaon University, Nainital, Uttarakhand was organized to celebrate the event. Professor Tewari, said that this years theme of water day draws attention to the hidden water resource that have always been critically important but not fully recognized in sustainable development policy making. Prof. Lalit further added that Groundwater is 99 percent of all liquid fresh water, has the potential to provide societies with tremendous social, economic and environmental benefits and opportunities which could be achieved by the strong and concerted action to manage and use it sustainably.Dr. A. A. Shah, Associate Dean, School of Biosciences and Biotechnology while giving opening remarks said that the exploring, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population. Dr Shreekar Pant, Coordinator, Centre for Biodiversity Studies, BGSBU welcomed all the guests and conducted the proceeding of the program. Dr. Mamta Bhat Assistant Professor, Environmental Sciences presented a formal vote of thanks.
