Jammu  : Commissioner, Relief and Rehabilitation (R&R) has strongly refuted news published in various sections of print media regarding construction of transit accommodation for Kashmiri Migrants in Valley spreading incorrect information about the ongoing construction works.
As per an official communiqué received in this regard here Tuesday, the private land was to be acquired for construction of these transit accommodations in the initial phase. However, due to cost escalation and time constraints of land acquisition process, a decision was taken in 2019 to acquire state land with an aim to speed up the construction work.
It is imperative to mention here that around 920 Kanal of land has been identified and transferred to the department of DMRRR at 19 locations for construction of transit accommodations in Kashmir valley. On the directions of Lieutenant Governor, J&K, the construction of transit accommodation has been taken up in a mission mode.
It is pertinent to mention here that during the winter season, the construction work in Kashmir division remains suspended between November and the end of February, thus shortening the working season. The construction work also suffered due to emergence of first two Covid-19 waves, whereas during the 3rd Covid -19 wave the work continued at a good pace.
Further, administrative approval has also been accorded to all the construction works to be carried out at the 19 locations thus paving way for completion of construction of these transit accommodations. Presently, construction work is in full swing at 07 locations comprising 1792 units. The work has been allotted in the case of another 384 units while work allotment is at the final stage in case of 2360 units. The tendering process has also been initiated for another 1392 units.
About 76% of construction work at Wandhama Ganderbal and 90% at Sheikhpora Budgam have been completed while construction work at other locations is also going on in full swing.
The government of Jammu and Kashmir is expeditiously working towards speedy completion of transit accommodations so that they are made available to migrant employees.
