Islam places great emphasis on manners and on the proper way to deal with others, whether they are Muslims or not. Relations between people are very important in Islam, and maintaining good relations with others is fundamental in Islamic social ideology. Integral to these good relations is the concept of being humble, which involves showing humility in all situations and being kind to everyone. Islam emphasizes the importance of kindness to parents; in numerous verses of the Quran, kindness to parents is mentioned immediately after belief in God. There is also much emphasis in Islam on kind and fair treatment of spouses. Treating every human with humility and kindness helps to create a peaceful, helpful and caring society. To be humble, we have to know ourselves: where we come from, where we are going in this life. We must be aware of the facts and exclude the inventions of our ego and imagination. The ego is not only resistant to accepting religious norms but also defies reason and awareness of facts. It prefers imagination and exaggeration. It loves heights and loves itself. It likes to see itself up above everything and everybody. It is blind and deaf to reality. To know ourselves, we have to stop doting on ourselves and become objective. We must look at ourselves with neutral eyes, the eyes of the norms of revealed law. Surely every believer will be able to locate generosity between avarice and wastefulness; honest work between ambition and laziness; courage between brazenness and cowardice; hope between doubt and rigidity. The median is the center of perfect balance.
The ego is not only resistant to accepting religious norms but also defies reason and awareness of facts.
That is what one has to discover in oneself. But because our ego is apt to push us upwards, it is best to consider ourselves as lesser than we have found ourselves to be. That is what humbleness is. In holy Quran different Ayahs are mentioned regarding humbleness: 1. “Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury. Allah is free of all wants, and He is Most-Forbearing.” 2. “Those who expend their wealth night and day, secretly and in public, their wage await them with their Lord, and no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow.” 3. “Pray to your Lord humbly and privately. God does not love the transgressors.” 4. “Thy Lord has commanded, Worship none but Him, and show kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, never say unto them any word expressive of disgust nor reproach them, but address them with excellent speech before them (your parents) in humility out of compassion, and say, My Lord, be merciful to them as they have brought me up in my childhood.” 5. “And the servants of the Beneficent Allah are they who walk on the earth in humbleness, and when the ignorant address them, they say: “Peace”.” “And be moderate in your walk, and lower your voice. Surely, the ugliest of voices is the voice of the donkeys.” 6. “We have advised the human being to be kind to his parents; his mother bore him with hardship and delivered him while suffering a great deal of pain. The period in which his mother bore and weaned him lasted for thirty months. When he grew-up to manhood and became forty years old, he then said, “Lord, inspire me to give You thanks for the bounties you have granted to me and my parents, and to act righteously to please You. Lord, make my offspring virtuous. Lord I turn to you in repentance; I am a Muslim”.
