Light vehicular traffic resumes from both sides on Kashmir highway

Srinagar: After clearing all the vehicles stranded at various places on both the sides of the Jawahar Tunnel, fresh light vehicular traffic was allowed to ply from both sides on the Srinagar-Jammu national, connecting Kashmir valley to rest of the country, since early Friday morning.
However, heavy vehicles will be allowed to move only from Jammu to Srinagar today on the highway.
“We have allowed fresh light vehicular traffic from both the sides after all the vehicles, including carrying Amarnath yatris, stranded at various places on the highway were cleared,” a traffic official said.
But, he said the cutoff time for Jammu bound vehicles to pass Jawahar Tunnel was 1200 hrs. “After that no vehicle will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu,” he said.
He said two-way heavy vehicle traffic on the highway will be allowed only after getting a green signal from the concerned authorities.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims, were stranded following closure of the national highway yesterday due landslides at Penthal and other places, triggered by overnight rains.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway put into service sophisticated machines and men and put through the traffic on the highway. But, yesterday only stranded vehicles about 200 in number were cleared.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road linking Ladakh region with Kashmir was through for traffic. The historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was also open.
