Srinagar: The Directorate of Sericulture Development Department (SDD), Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday organized an Annual Cocoon auction market at Tulsi Bagh here to facilitate sale of Cocoon production of sericulture farmers of the valley.
Director SDD, J&K Manzoor Ahmad Qadiri inaugurated the phenomenal activity of marketing of silk cocoons in Kashmir Division.
Special Secretary to Govt Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare Department UT, Farooq Ahmad Dar, Director Agriculture Department, Mohammad Iqbal Chowdhary, Dean Faculty-Temperate College of Sericulture, SKUAST-K, F A Bakal, Joint Director and Project Executive Officer J&K, Ghulam Nabi Mir, Assistant Director Kashmir Sericulture, Central Silk board Officers, District Sericulture Officers and Cocoon producers were present on the occasion.
The cocoon auction market offers an interface between the Cocoon growers and local outside buyers. There is a health cut throat competition amongst the buyers as the silk process has been witnessing sudden surges for the last few months.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director said that the silk industry is an old industry of J&K which provides employment to a large number of people. Besides, he said the auction market was being organized every year in the month of September but on the demand of silk farmers the event was held in August, this year.
He informed us that the market has improved this year and the trend is very encouraging and further asked the buyers to keep a positive attitude while purchasing cocoons from farmers.
He also informed that the government will provide incentives to the farmers according to the cocoon production which will ensure healthy competition among the farmers.
A huge population of silkworm peasantry is participating in the markets and a good number of buyers are enthusiastic to book the profit on account of the purchase of international quality silk.
